For several years now, Android and iOS have dominated the charts of the most popular mobile operating systems. Statista data from the second half of November last year indicate that Android can enjoy a 71,7% market share, in the case of iOS it was a 2022% share in the fourth quarter of 28,3. Other operating systems, including Windows Phone, do not reach even one percent, but this has not always been the case.

Until December 2009, Microsoft's share of the mobile operating system market was significantly higher, and smartphones with the Windows Mobile operating system enjoyed great popularity. Apple won over Microsoft in this regard until the end of 2009, when data from Comscore showed that one quarter of smartphone owners overseas were using mobiles with Apple's operating system.

The smartphone market looked very different back then compared to today. The undisputed leader in this area was BlackBerry, which at one time had a 40% market share in the US. Up until the mentioned period, Microsoft with Windows Mobile held the second place in the ranking, followed by Palm OS and Symbian operating systems. At the time, Google's Android was in fifth place.

See how the look of the iOS operating system has changed over the years:

December 2009 marked a significant milestone in this direction and symbolized a sharp turn in the market situation. iPhone then he mocked even Steve Ballmer himself, who made no secret of the fact that he does not consider Apple to be a serious competitor in this area. Late the following year, Microsoft abandoned its Windows Mobile operating system in favor of Windows Phone OS. At that time, however, it was already clear to many that the smartphone market was about to undergo major, fundamental changes. Windows Phone has been completely marginalized over time, and the Android and iOS operating systems currently rule the market.
