SOCIETY Canalys published its report, in which it takes into account the sale of smart watches for the second quarter of 2021. In it, the Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi overtook Apple, Huawei took third place. While the news may sound somewhat negative for Apple, it certainly isn't. As far as sales are concerned, Apple is still leading, and it has an ace up its sleeve. The report informs that Xiaomi sold 2 million "smart watches" during the 2021nd quarter of 8. In contrast, Apple sold 7,9 million Apple Watches. So the difference is small, Xiaomi smart watches are also not smart in the overwhelming majority, because they are primarily sales of fitness bracelets. The statistics thus count more on the wearables market, which does not include headphones or other accessories that you do not wear on your wrist.

During the quarter, Xiaomi scored with the introduction of the new generation of its Mi Smart Band 6 bracelet, when this series is popular all over the world mainly because of the many features available at a friendly price. If you look at the pure smartwatch market, Apple is still the clear leader. It has an unattainable 31,1% of the market, while the second Huawei has 9% and the third Garmin 7,6%. Xiaomi is still behind the fourth Samsung with 7% and it owns 5,7%. With the exception of a drastic drop in Huawei devices, all other smartwatch companies grew year-over-year along with the overall market. For Apple it was 29,4%. But Samsung also scored visibly with its newly introduced smart watch, because it grew by almost 85%, but for Xiaomi it was a dizzying 272%, which, moreover, does not include the Mi Smart Band series at all. The smart watch market thus grew by 37,9%, the overall wearables market by 5,6%. Users are thus slowly switching from simple bracelets to more sophisticated devices. 

Apple's counterattack 

Hand on heart, we must state that the Apple Watch has really weak competition. Let's hope that at least the new Wear OS will come close to them, so that Apple does not rest on its laurels and tries to keep innovating its watches accordingly. We will soon see what direction his watches, which are still the best-selling in the world (including the classic ones), will go. During September, we should learn not only the form of the Apple Watch Series 7, but of course also their functions. This is also why Apple lost in this segment in Q2 2021. The majority of customers are quite logically waiting for the new generation, from which quite a lot is expected. If the first significant redesign since the first generation does come, it's likely that Apple will tear all the tables to shreds. Users who are bored with the same look over and over will change to a new one. It will also convince not only all hesitant customers to buy, but also those who still own the Apple Watch Series 3, which is completely unsatisfactory in terms of hardware.

Those who are not used to the novelty will also be able to reach for the discounted current generation, i.e. Series 6 or Apple Watch SE. In every way, it's clear that this will be a clear win for Apple. Practically, it just depends on whether it will have enough units produced, which is a message that has been resonating quite a bit across the internet lately. On the other hand, it may be an artificially created impression of scarcity, so that Apple can target the pre-Christmas market with full force and from the spring it can properly brag about the results for the first fiscal quarter of 2022, in which the Christmas period falls.
