The new wireless networking standard is here. Called Wi-Fi 6, it comes just before iPhones go on sale on Thursday.

If the designation Wi-Fi 6 seems unfamiliar to you, then know that it is not the original name. The standardization organization decided to abandon the increasingly confusing letter names and start numbering all standards. Earlier names were even renumbered retroactively.

The latest generation of Wi-Fi 802.11ax is now called Wi-Fi 6. Further, the "older" 802.11ac will be known as Wi-Fi 5 and finally 802.11n will be called Wi-Fi 4.

All new Wi-Fi 6 / 802.11ax compliant devices can now use the new designation to indicate compatibility with the latest standard.

Wi-Fi 6 is the new designation for the 802.11ax standard

The iPhone 6 is among the first to be certified for Wi-Fi 11

Among compatible devices then it also includes iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max. These latest Apple smartphones meet the conditions and can therefore fully use the Wi-Fi 6 standard.

However, Wi-Fi 6 is not just about playing with letters and numbers. Compared to the fifth generation, it offers a longer range, even through obstacles, and especially better management of more active devices on the transmitter or less demand on the battery. While everyone will appreciate the battery life, multiple devices connected to a single router are interesting especially for companies and schools.

So the new standard is among us and all that remains is to wait until it becomes more widespread. The problem is probably not the devices themselves, but rather the network infrastructure.
