Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg this week confirmed his plans to merge WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger. At the same time, he stated that this step will not happen before next year, and he immediately explained what benefits the merger can bring to users.

As part of the announcement of financial results for the fourth quarter of last year, Zuckerberg not only confirmed the aforementioned merger of services under the Facebook company, but at the same time he also clarified how such a merger will work in practice. Concerns about merging services are understandable given Facebook's security scandals. According to his own words, Zuckerberg intends to prevent problems with potential threats to privacy with a number of measures, including, for example, end-to-end encryption.

Many people use WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger on some level, but each application serves a different purpose. Merging such different platforms makes almost no sense to the average user. However, Zuckerberg is confident that people will ultimately appreciate the move. One of the reasons for his own enthusiasm for the idea of merging the services is that even more users will switch to end-to-end encryption, which he describes as one of WhatsApp's biggest advantages. This has been part of the application since April 2016. But Messenger does not include the aforementioned form of security in its default settings, and end-to-end encryption is not available on Instagram either.

Another advantage of merging all three platforms, according to Zuckerberg, is greater convenience and ease of use, as users will no longer have to switch between individual applications. As an example, Zuckerberg cites a case where a user shows interest in a product on Facebook Marketplace and smoothly switches to communication with the seller via WhatsApp.

Do you think the merger of Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp makes sense? What do you think it would look like in practice?
