Apple picker The Otakar Motel Fund is launching the second year of the competition, which awards the best applications built on open data. Authors can report their applications until October 31, 2014, winners will receive financial and in-kind prizes. Competitors can also take advantage of expert consultations by mentors from leading IT companies that are competition partners.
State authorities, regions and cities are gradually making information available in structured and machine-readable formats that enable further use. The aim of the competition, the conditions of which can be found at www.otevrenadata.cz, is to support this trend and to appreciate high-quality applications that use open data to create new services beneficial to the public. Last year's winners included, for example, the EU Funds project mapping the recipients of euro grants or the Najdi-lékárnu portal, which can find the nearest pharmacy and compare drug prices.
"The first year of the competition showed that applications created on open data can make life easier for citizens or make the management of institutions more transparent. This year, too, we want to inspire not only developers to new projects, but also other public authorities to open up their data," says Jiří Knitl, manager of the Otakara Motel Fund.
Czech companies also support making public administration data available, and many of them therefore decided to become a partner of the Let's Open Data competition this year.
"We consider making data available very important. The applications that were successful last year showed how such projects can contribute to improving the situation and draw attention to unexpected connections. Thanks to them, we better understand what is happening around us," says Ondřej Filip, director of CZ.NIC, one of the general partners of the event.
