Do you have 12 in your pocket and are you wondering whether to buy an Apple phone or the one from Samsung's rival stable in the form of the Galaxy A53 5G model? If you don't lean towards either brand, you're going to have a pretty tough time. Everyone clearly excels at something.

It should be said at the outset that the Samsung Galaxy A53 5G is a direct competitor to the 3rd generation iPhone SE. The first one will cost you CZK 11 in the official Samsung store, and the second one will cost you CZK 490 in the Apple Online Store. However, the difference in the form of one thousand CZK is the smallest thing you will have to deal with. I'd like to say it's a straightforward decision, but that's not entirely true.

Light weight is not an advantage

First of all, it's about size. If you're targeting small devices, the Galaxy A53 5G won't impress you. It is a large device, only slightly smaller than the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Its dimensions are 159,6 x 74,8 x 8,1 and its weight is only 189 g. This is due to the construction, where the back is simply plastic. They are therefore quite pleasant to the touch, even if you have gotten used to it quite a bit since the iPhone 3GS. Unfortunately, the impression of luxury is only visible to the eye. The whole design is quite pleasing, the form factor of the camera output is really original, so there is nothing to criticize here. Before you pick up the device.

But when you pick up the iPhone SE, you just know that you're holding a quality phone without compromise. And plastic is definitely a compromise, no matter how recycled it is. In addition, it gives the impression of an extremely thin shell that simply has to crack sooner or later. But that is a subjective impression, we are certainly not saying that it has to be that way. But we are only at the back side so far. If you look at the phones from their front, the whole game will change considerably, when Samsung will clearly attack and win.

There is simply nothing to talk about with the display

The 4,7" LCD display is already past its zenith these days (but that was already in 2020). Sure, you can argue that it's great for an undemanding user. But keep in mind that here we are comparing two devices from the same price range. So why not treat yourself to both the view and the flight? The Galaxy A53 5G will offer you a 120Hz 6,5" Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080 × 2400 and a hole for a selfie camera. In addition, there is also a fingerprint reader integrated into the display. It's beautiful, big, bright, and has one flaw. Sensors shine through around the camera under the display. It doesn't look too good on light wallpaper.

Four to one

Where the iPhone SE 3rd generation has only one, albeit quality camera, the Galaxy A53 5G will offer four. Well, the 5MPx (sf/2,4) depth-of-field sensor is only up to the mark, which can also be said to some extent about the 5MPx macro (sf/2,4). But then here you will find a 12MPx ultra-wide-angle camera sf/2,2 and the main 64MPx wide-angle camera sf/1,8. And that's a different joke when it comes to the variability of photography. In addition, there is also a night mode. The front camera is then 32MPx sf/2,2. Samsung clearly leads here as well. In addition, the main wide-angle camera also has OIS, even when recording videos. Of course, you will also find some special modes such as AI Image Enhancer or Fun mode, etc. Even the iPhone is helped by a number of software tricks. The Portrait mode is not only limited to human smiles, but you can take pictures of anything with it. What more could a middle class customer ask for. Sample photos are reduced in size, you can view them in full resolution here.

Performance and endurance

Just as there is an unambiguous measurement of the size of the displays, it is similar for the performance, only in favor of the iPhone. There is nothing better on the mobile phone market yet. Galaxy A53 5G will serve everything you prepare for it. Somewhere faster, somewhere slower, but still as you would expect from Android for 12 thousand. But the iPhone will be everywhere earlier. That's just a fact. The battery with a capacity of 5000 mAh is nice, and it will do just fine for the day and a half. The durability, even with the degree of protection IP67, is pleasing, but the absence of wireless charging is disappointing. For that, the fast 25 W is here. There is only a memory variant of 6 GB RAM and 128 GB internal memory to choose from. Which is cool, because there's also a slot for up to a 1TB microSD card.

Own impressions

Apart from specifications and paper values, it is important how the device is worked with and how its operating system is controlled. How the iPhone SE 3rd generation is doing is clear. However, Android 12 with One UI 4.1, i.e. Samsung's superstructure, is completely fine. It is a fast and problem-free system, which you will penetrate in no time and will have no problem getting your bearings in it. Because it is also highly customizable, you can set it to your own image. It is also used by the manufacturer's flagships in the form of the Galaxy S22 series. Samsung has a pretty nice ecosystem if you were to use their tablets as well. The device also understands Windows and, of course, Google services very well.

If Samsung didn't need to save at all costs and gave the device a body that is at least close to the Galaxy S21 FE, the device would make a better impression overall. With respect to iPhones, the construction just makes you feel like it's a toy. But this toy has a real number of advantages that the Phone SE simply surpasses. Of course, it would be different compared to other models, for example the iPhone 11, but we are already elsewhere in terms of price. In addition, with regard to the display, the Apple phone would still not win.

Being an Android user and not wanting a more expensive, more premium device, this would be an obvious choice. That's even for four years of Android updates and 5 years of security. Here, Apple is further along, but I can't imagine using the iPhone SE in 4 years, even today. Honestly, I can't even do it with the Galaxy A53 5G, which I would rather think about when buying it so that it will be replaced by a successor in two years.
