There are games that will get you excited and greet you with their closing credits after a few fun-filled hours. And then there are games that will throw sticks at your feet for dozens of hours, don't tell you everything about important game mechanics, and occasionally make you want to throw the controller out the window. It is precisely in the second category, which is sometimes paradoxically more satisfying than the first category, that For The King is a challenging mix of RPG and roguelike genres.

The game from the studio IronOak Games welcomes you into its world existing in hexagon grids by retelling a simple exposition. The ruler of the local kingdoms has fallen asleep and thus the world has fallen into chaos. You will then defeat the embodied forces of evil in the game with groups of heroes that are randomly recruited from among the civilian population. But don't get too emotionally attached to any of your groups. You probably won't enjoy the first ones very much.

The game's relentless combat system combines a number of random elements with tactical decision-making in turn-based battles. In most cases, the cruelty of the game makes short work of inexperienced fighters. However, with increasing experience, you will always go further in each passage. The ability to purchase equipment between individual passages for special resources will also help you with this. So you end up fighting for a dead king with subjects armed to the teeth.
