The world of technology is constantly moving forward, and along with it, gaming in general. Thanks to this, today we have at our disposal interesting game titles and technologies that are slowly resembling reality itself. Of course, to make matters worse, we can also play in virtual reality, for example, and fully immerse ourselves in the experience itself. On the other hand, we shouldn't forget the iconic retro games, which definitely have a lot to offer. But at this point we come to a crossroads with several options.

Retro games or old classics

The gaming industry has gone through a huge revolution over the past decades, transforming from a simple game called Pong to unprecedented proportions. Because of this, part of the video game community also places great emphasis on the already mentioned retro games, which directly shaped the development in this area. Probably the vast majority of you fondly remember titles like Super Mario, Tetris, Prince of Persia, Doom, Sonic, Pac-Man and more. However, if you would like to play some old games, you may encounter a minor problem. How to actually enjoy this game experience, what are the options and which one to choose?

A battle between consoles and emulators

Basically, there are two most used options for playing old games. The first one is to purchase the given console and the game, or to purchase a direct retro edition of the given console, while in the second case you just need to take your computer or phone and play the games through the emulator. Unfortunately, what's worse is that there isn't a single correct answer to the original question. It simply depends on the player and his preferences.

However, I have personally tried both ways, and since Christmas this year I have, for example, Nintendo Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros., which we received in the editorial office as a gift under the tree. It is an interesting game console that makes available to players games like Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros. 2 and Ball, while also managing to display the time when it takes on the role of a clock. A color display, integrated speakers and convenient control via the appropriate buttons are also a matter of course. On the other hand, when playing games through a phone or PC emulator, the whole experience is a bit different. With the mentioned console from Nintendo, although it is newer, the player still has a kind of good feeling about returning to his childhood. It has special equipment reserved for these trips into history, which serves no other purpose and cannot actually offer anything else. On the contrary, I personally don't feel that way about the second option and honestly I have to admit that in that case I'd rather start with nicer and newer titles.

Of course, this view is highly subjective and may vary from player to player. On the other hand, emulators bring us a number of other benefits that we can only dream about otherwise. Thanks to them, we can start playing practically any games, and all this in a moment. At the same time, it is a much cheaper option for gaming, since you have to invest some money in (retro) consoles. If you also had an original console, believe me that you put a lot of effort into finding old games (often still in cartridge form).

So which option to choose?

As mentioned above, both options have something in common and it always just depends on the individual players. If you have the opportunity, he will definitely test both variants, or you can combine them. For die-hard fans, it is a matter of course that they will not only decide to play on classic and retro consoles, but at the same time will passionately set about creating their own collection of not only games, but also consoles. Undemanding players often get by with emulators and the like.
