This autumn, we are not only expecting new iPhones and Apple Watch, but at least we should also expect a new generation of the basic iPad model. Relatively big things are expected from him, when Apple should abandon the captured design and rework the chassis or enlarge the display after a long time. Here's everything we know about the upcoming 10th generation iPad.

A14 Bionic

The current 9th generation 10,2" iPad is equipped with an A13 Bionic chip, so it is quite logical that it will be replaced by a more powerful one in order for Apple to meet the demands of new applications and games, but also of its own system (with respect to future updates). The magazine came up with this information 9to5Mac, which states that the new generation of the tablet will have the same chip as the iPhone 12 and iPad Air 4. So the increase in performance will not be huge, but considering that the basic iPad is "basic" after all, it is not completely necessary.

What Apple will come up with with RAM is the question. The current generation is only 3GB, while the iPad Air 4 has 4GB of RAM (same as the iPhone 12). Stage Manager support is unlikely to come this way.

5G

Every new Apple portable device model that the company introduces already supports 5G. However, Cellular versions of the base 9th generation iPad are still limited to LTE only. Nowadays, it would be logical for Apple to equip its new product with a 5G module, although it is true that this may not be an important function for many, because the usability of this connectivity is directly related to the quality of signal coverage.

USB-C

Among iPads, it is the basic model that seems exotic mainly for two reasons - because of the desktop button and Lightning. One of the most anticipated changes is the transition of Lightning to USB-C. This opens up a world of possibilities for iPad users, as the connector supports higher data rates and even a wider range of peripherals. So, if we really get USB-C in the basic iPad, it would naturally have to support the 2nd generation Apple Pencil, which would also charge wirelessly. Its first generation is charged through Lightning and it would be rather strange if we had to buy a reduction.

Design

Apple should modernize in more ways than one, so when it brings a modern USB-C, it will also bring a new look for the iPad, which will of course be based on the iPad Pro, which already has the iPad Air and mini. Based on the leaked renders, this may actually be true. The images show a design quite similar to other flat-sided iPad models, with the rendering also suggesting that the new iPad will be slightly thinner than the current one.

Camera

For the very reason that the iPad should have a redesigned chassis, Apple will modify the camera area as well. In the current generation, it is only 8 MPx with an aperture of f/2,4. Yes, it is enough for basic photos and scans, but the company could easily include the one from the current iPad Air and mini, which is 12MPx with an aperture of f/1,8. For that reason, it should also be prominent, although not exactly in the form that it is with the mentioned iPads, but rather as it was with the iPhone X/XS.

Display

Since the new chassis means a new setup of the production lines, Apple can also optimize the display size. It could jump from the current 10,2 to 10,5 inches. The change is only cosmetic, but the larger display will simply provide more space not only for the fingers, but also for the eyes. The desktop button will remain, so the same quality of the front-facing camera will also be maintained. But the frames should be narrowed.

Price

Storage capacities should remain at the current values of 64 and 256 GB. The price of the 9th generation iPad is CZK 9 and CZK 990 respectively. It would be very nice if Apple kept them, but it is rather unlikely. So there will be some cosmetic increase, but hopefully it will only be within five hundred. The current colors will probably remain, i.e. space gray and silver. However, if Apple was brave, it could at least go star white instead of silver.

When will we wait?

There are two variants in play, the less likely one being during the September keynote with the introduction of the iPhone 14 and Apple Watch Series 8 (which has already happened historically). However, the October date is more likely, when Apple could introduce the iPad Pro and new Mac computers with M2 chips. In addition, some have appeared recently news, that Apple could release its iPadOS 16 only in October, which would add to this theory.
