With the introduction of the iPadOS 13.4 operating system, a number of changes have come that relate to the way certain accessories are connected and how they work. For example, full cursor support has been added when using a Bluetooth mouse or trackpad and a number of other novelties. Cursor or gesture support applies not only to Apple's Magic Keyboard s or Magic Trackpad, but also to all compatible third-party accessories. Mouse and trackpad support is available for all iPads that can install iPadOS 13.4.

Mouse and iPad

Apple already introduced Bluetooth mouse support for its iPads with the arrival of the iOS 13 operating system, but until the release of iOS 13.4, the mouse had to connect to the tablet in a complicated way via Accessibility. However, in the latest version of iPadOS, connecting a mouse (or trackpad) to an iPad is much easier - just pair it in Settings -> Bluetooth, where the bar with the name of your mouse should be at the bottom of the list of available devices. Before pairing, make sure the mouse is not already paired with your Mac or other device. You simply pair the mouse with your iPad by clicking on its name. After successful pairing, you can immediately start working with the cursor on the iPad. You can also wake your iPad from sleep mode with a mouse attached – just click.

Cursor shaped like a dot, not an arrow

By default, the cursor on the iPad display does not appear in the form of an arrow, as we are used to from a computer, but in the shape of a ring - it should represent the pressure of a finger. However, the appearance of the cursor may change depending on the content you are hovering over. If you move the cursor around the desktop or on the Dock, it has the shape of a circle. If you point it to a place in the document that can be edited, it will change to a tab shape. If you move the cursor over the buttons, they will be highlighted. You can then launch applications, select menu items and perform a number of other actions by clicking. If you want to control the cursor with your finger directly on the screen, however, you need to have the Assitive Touch function activated. Here you activate v Settings -> Accessibility -> Touch.

Right-click and other controls

iPadOS 13.4 also offers right-click support when a context menu is available. You activate the Dock on the iPad by moving the mouse cursor to the bottom of the display. The Control Center appears after you point the cursor to the upper right corner and click on the bar with the indicator for battery status and Wi-Fi connection. In the Control Center environment, you can then open the context menu of individual items by right-clicking. Notifications appear on your iPad after you point your cursor to the top of the screen and swipe up. Move the cursor to the right side of the tablet display to display the Slide Over applications.

Gestures must not be missing!

The iPadOS 13.4 operating system also offers gesture support - you can move in a document or on a web page with the help of your finger, you can also move in the application environment by swiping left or right as you know it from working on a display or trackpad - in a web browser For example, Safari can use this gesture to move forward and backward in the web page history. You can use the three-finger swipe gesture either to switch between open applications or to scroll left and right. A three-finger swipe up gesture on the trackpad will take you to the home page. Pinch with three fingers to close the current app.

Additional settings

You can adjust the speed of the cursor movement on the iPad in Settings -> Accessibility -> Pointer Control, where you adjust the cursor speed on the slider. If you connect a Magic Keyboard with a trackpad to your iPad, or the Magic Trackpad itself, you can find the trackpad settings in Settings -> General -> Trackpad, where you can customize cursor speed and individual actions. In order to make the appropriate mouse and trackpad settings and customizations on your iPad, the accessory needs to be connected to the iPad - otherwise you won't see the option.
