When you look at the entire portfolio of products that Apple presented as part of its California Streaming event, they don't attract as much attention with their redesign as the Apple Watch or the iPhone. It is the iPad mini (6th generation) that was the only one to receive a truly complete redesign. According to Apple, it offers mega performance in a mini body. A new design with a display over the entire surface, a powerful A15 Bionic chip, ultra-fast 5G and Apple Pencil support - these are the main points that Apple itself points out in the new product. But of course there is more news. It is actually a completely new device, which only has the same name.

Display over the entire surface

Following the example of the iPad Air, the iPad mini got rid of the desktop button and hid Touch ID in the top button. This still allows for quick, easy and secure device owner verification. You can also pay quickly and securely through it. The new display is 8,3" (compared to the original 7,9") with True Tone, a wide P3 color range and extremely low reflectivity. It has a resolution of 2266 × 1488 at 326 pixels per inch, a wide color range (P3) and a brightness of 500 nits. There is also support for the 2nd generation Apple Pencil, which attaches magnetically to the iPad and charges wirelessly.

While a jump of less than half an inch may seem insignificant to you, it is worth mentioning that the device also has a smaller body, especially in height, where the 5th generation was 7,8 mm taller. The width is the same (134,8 mm), the new product added 0,2 mm to the depth. Otherwise, she lost weight, by 7,5 g, so she weighs 293 g.

Pleasantly small, extremely powerful

Apple installed the A15 Bionic chip in its smallest tablet, which can handle any activity you need to do with your tablet. It can be complex applications or even the most demanding games, and everything will run as smoothly as possible. The chip has a 64-bit architecture, a 6-core CPU, a 5-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine. The CPU is thus 40% faster compared to the previous generation, and the Neural Engine was twice as fast. And according to Apple itself, the graphics are 80% faster. And those are impressive numbers.

Charging now takes place via USB-C instead of Lightning. There is a built-in 19,3Wh rechargeable lithium-polymer battery that will give you up to 10 hours of Wi-Fi web browsing or video playback. For the Cellular model, expect an hour less battery life. Unlike iPhones, a 20W USB-C charging adapter is included in the package (along with a USB-C cable). The Cellular version does not lack 5G support, otherwise Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5 are present.

Ultra wide angle camera

The camera jumped from 7MPx to 12MPx with an aperture of ƒ/1,8. The lens is five-element, the digital zoom is five times, the True Tone flash is four diodes. There is also automatic focusing with Focus Pixels technology, Smart HDR 3 or automatic image stabilization. Video can be recorded up to 4K quality at 24 fps, 25 fps, 30 fps or 60 fps. The front camera is also 12 MPx, but it is already an ultra-wide-angle one with a 122° field of view. The aperture here is ƒ/2,4, while Smart HDR 3 is also not missing here. However, the function of centering the shot has been added, which will take care of more natural video calls.

It won't be for nothing

The portfolio of colors has also grown. The original silver and gold are replaced by pink, purple and starry white, space gray remains. All variants have a black front around the display. The price starts at CZK 14 for the Wi-Fi version in the 490GB variant. The 64GB model will cost you CZK 256. The model with Cellular costs CZK 18 and CZK 490, respectively. You can order the iPad mini (18th generation) now, it will be on sale from September 490.
