The expected operating system macOS 13 Ventura will bring with it a number of interesting novelties. In particular, we are waiting for an improved Spotlight with a number of new options, so-called access keys for better security, the ability to edit already sent messages within iMessage, a new system for organizing Stage Manager windows, an improved design and many others. The novelty of the camera via Continuity is also gaining considerable attention. With the help of the new operating systems macOS 13 Ventura and iOS 16, the iPhone can be used as a webcam and thus achieve the highest quality image.

Of course, all of this will work wirelessly, without having to worry about complex connections or other problems. At the same time, this new feature is available across all systems. Therefore, it will not be limited to selected applications, but on the contrary, it will be possible to use it literally anywhere - whether in the native FaceTime solution, or during video conference calls via Microsoft Team or Zoom, on Discord, Skype and others. So let's take a look at this much-anticipated new product together and analyze what it can actually do. There is definitely not a lot of it.

iPhone as a webcam

As we mentioned above, the core of the news itself is that the iPhone can be used as a webcam in any application. The macOS operating system will work with the apple phone as with any external camera – it will appear in the list of available cameras and all you have to do is select it. Subsequently, the Mac connects to the iPhone wirelessly, without the user having to confirm anything lengthy. At the same time, in this regard, it is necessary to draw attention to overall safety. When you use the iPhone as a webcam, you will not be able to work on it. Apple, of course, has a valid reason for this. Otherwise, purely theoretically, it could happen that you would normally use your phone and not have the slightest idea that someone nearby can view what is in front of you on your Mac.

Mac users will finally get a high-quality webcam - in the form of an iPhone. Apple computers have long been known for their low quality webcams. Although Apple has finally begun to improve them, when instead of 720p cameras they opted for 1080p, it is still nothing world-shattering. The main advantage of this novelty clearly lies in its simplicity. Not only is there no need to set up anything complicated, but most importantly, the function also works whenever you have an iPhone near your Mac. Everything is fast, stable and flawless. Despite the fact that the image is transmitted wirelessly.

Desk View function, which can visualize the user's desktop thanks to the ultra-wide-angle lens

But to make matters worse, macOS 13 Ventura is also able to utilize all the advantages and possibilities that the cameras of today's iPhones have. For example, we can also find use in the ultra-wide-angle lens, which is found on all models from the iPhone 12 series. In such a case, a computer with the Center Stage function is specifically possible, which automatically focuses the shot on the user, even in cases where he moves from side to side. However, what is the best of all is a gadget called Desk View, known in Czech as A view of the table. It was precisely this function that managed to take the breath away of the vast majority of apple lovers. An iPhone attached to the cover of a MacBook, which is aimed directly at the user (straight), so again thanks to the ultra-wide-angle lens, it can also provide a perfect shot of the table. Although the image in such a case has to deal with unprecedented distortion, the system can process it flawlessly in real time and thus provide not only a high-quality shot of the user, but also of his desktop. This can be used, for example, in various presentations or tutorials.

Continuity

As the name suggests, the ability to use an iPhone as a webcam is part of the Continuity functions. This is where Apple has been focusing more in recent years, bringing us features to make our daily lives easier. There is nothing to be surprised about. One of the strongest characteristics of apple products is the interconnectedness between individual products within the entire ecosystem, in which continuity plays an absolutely essential role. It could simply be summed up as, where the capabilities of the Mac are not enough, the iPhone is happy to help. What do you think about this news?
