In connection with the upcoming iOS 14 operating system, we will see a number of different novelties. One of them is the improvement of iCloud Keychain with support for two-factor authentication, password analysis and other new features. It should be noted that in this case it is not a matter of speculation and iCloud Keychain will be practically 100% improved in the mentioned ways. We can say this for sure thanks to the leaks of the source code of the operating system iOS 14, which the editors from our sister foreign magazine 9to5Mac received.

Two-factor authentication

iCloud Keychain is a useful tool for storing passwords and other sensitive data. A number of third-party applications also serve this purpose - the most popular solutions in this direction include, for example, 1Password or LastPass. Third-party apps have one very useful feature, which is two-factor authentication. When using two-factor authentication, the login to the given website or application does not occur only after entering the password, but only after additional verification using an SMS or e-mail message. In the future, iCloud Keychain could offer users a solution for storing two-factor authentication passwords, but the details of its operation are not yet known.

Improved password security

Another new feature could be the detection of password reliability – iCloud Keychain could get a feature that would recognize a repeatedly used password and automatically prompt the user to change it. Using a unique password for each login is one of the main security principles. Although the keychain can currently recognize repeatedly used passwords, it does not have a user notification function. The fact that you have used a certain password in more than one place can be recognized in the Keychain by the small triangle symbol in the list of passwords. To check for duplicate passwords, go to Settings -> Passwords & Accounts -> Site & App Passwords. You may notice a small warning triangle with an exclamation point on the item with a duplicate password. Click on the item and select "Change password on the page" in the menu.

Apple presents new versions of its operating systems as part of the developer conference WWDC. It usually takes place every year in June. However, this year's WWDC will be moved due to the coronavirus pandemic exclusively to the online space, in addition to iOS 14 and macOS 10.16, Apple will also present watchOS 7 and tvOS 14 operating systems.
