The iMessage communication platform works within Apple's operating systems. With its help, apple users can send each other text and voice messages or multimedia files, while all communication is so-called end-to-end encryption. In essence, however, it is generally a relatively popular solution, primarily in Apple's homeland, i.e. the United States. On the other hand, it is necessary to realize that even so, the platform has quite a few shortcomings, due to which it is several steps behind its competition.

In the case of iMessage, Apple primarily benefits from its ecosystem. The communication application is already natively integrated into the Messages application on all devices, thanks to which we can communicate with others from iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple Watch. And all this without having to download anything or make complicated settings. However, as mentioned above, there are shortcomings, and there are not a few of them, on the contrary. There is room for a lot of improvements in iMessage that could put Apple in a significantly more advantageous position.

Inspiration from the competition

Let's start right away with the fundamental shortcomings, which are a matter of course in the case of competing communication applications. Although Apple is trying to somehow advance iMessage, unfortunately, even so, the train is running out of steam and it is difficult to catch up. If you are one of our regular readers, then you may remember our earlier article about the new approach to native apps. In theory, it could be nice if Apple updated these native applications in the normal way, i.e. through the App Store, rather than always bringing individual changes in the form of system updates. The competition has a significant advantage in that as soon as it completes the update, it is (mostly) automatically downloaded to users. Apple, on the other hand, is waiting for further news, and then it is also not sure whether the apple maker will update the system at all. But that is the smallest thing in the final.

The missing functions are rather essential for us. And again, just look at how the competition is doing. Of course, it's not the best to copy all the changes that other developers make, but it's definitely not a bad thing to be inspired by something. In this regard, the option to cancel sending a message is clearly missing, as is the case, for example, in Messenger or WhatsApp. Because anyone can overlook and send a message to the wrong person, which in the best case will require you to laugh at the mistake, in the worst case you will have to explain a lot.

Apple is sometimes criticized for its overall speed. While the aforementioned WhatsApp can send a message, even with a poor connection, practically immediately, in the case of the Apple platform it simply takes a while. Something similar also happens when we send a photo/video and immediately follow it with a text message. With the competition, the text would be sent ahead of time, practically immediately, as possible. However, iMessage takes a different approach when, in order to maintain some continuity, it waits for the first multimedia to be sent, and only then the message. Finally, some apple users lack the ability to set the appearance of chats, the ability to use bold or italic text and any special nicknames that would only work within iMessage.

Will we see changes?

The iMessage communication platform can therefore be improved in several directions. But the question remains whether we will actually see similar changes in the near future. In general, there is not much talk about the upcoming news in the field of software, so it is not yet certain what iOS 16, for example, will bring us. In any case, the Cupertino giant already announced at the beginning of the week that the WWDC 6 developer conference will be held from June 10 to 2022, 2022. You can therefore expect new operating systems to be revealed on its first day, whereby Apple will reveal upcoming changes.
