We could unanimously call the iPhone the main and currently most important product of Apple. Apple smartphones are the most popular among users and also account for the largest share of revenue. Apple came up with the first iPhone back in 2007, when it literally defined the form of modern smartphones that are still offered to us today. Since then, of course, technology has moved forward at a rocket pace, and the capabilities of iPhones have improved significantly as well. Nevertheless, the question is what will happen when not only the iPhone, but smartphones in general hit their ceiling.

In short, it could be said that nothing lasts forever and one day the iPhone will be replaced by a more modern and friendly technology. Although such a change may seem too futuristic for the time being, it is necessary to take into account such a possibility, or at least consider what the phones could be replaced with. Of course, the technological giants are still preparing for possible changes and innovations every day and developing possible successors. What type of product could actually replace smartphones?

Flexible phones

Samsung, in particular, is already showing us a certain direction in which we could go in the future. He has been developing so-called flexible or folding phones for several years, which can be folded or unfolded according to current needs and thus have a truly multifunctional device at your disposal. For example, their Samsung Galaxy Z Fold model line is a great example. This product also functions as an ordinary smartphone, which when unfolded offers a 7,6" display (Galaxy Z Fold4), which practically brings it closer to tablets.

But it is a question whether flexible phones can be seen as a possible future. As it looks so far, other manufacturers are not moving much into this segment. For this reason, it will certainly be interesting to watch the upcoming developments and the possible entry of other technology giants into this industry. For example, various leaks and speculations about the development of Apple's flexible phone have been spreading among Apple fans for a long time. That Apple is at least toying with this idea is also confirmed by registered patents referring to the technology of flexible displays and solutions to the relevant issues.

Augmented/Virtual Reality

Products associated with augmented and virtual reality could be responsible for a completely fundamental revolution. According to a series of leaks, Apple is even working on a smart high-end AR/VR headset that should significantly advance the capabilities of the industry and offer a sleek design, light weight, two 4K micro-OLED displays, a number of optical modules, probably two main chipsets, tracking eye movement and many others. Although, for example, smart glasses with augmented reality may resemble futuristic science fiction, in reality we are not that far from its realization. Smart contact lenses have been in the works for a long time Mojo vision, which promise to bring augmented reality with a built-in display and battery directly to the eye.

It is precisely smart glasses or contact lenses with AR that are receiving a lot of attention from technology enthusiasts, because in theory they promise a complete change in how we perceive modern technology. Of course, such a product could also be connected to diopters and thus help with vision defects, like normal glasses or lenses, while also offering a number of smart functions. In this case, it can be the display of notifications, navigation, the digital zoom function and many others.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has now also spoken in favor of augmented reality (AR). The latter, on the occasion of a visit to the University of Naples by Frederick II. (Università Degli Studi di Napoli Federico II) stated during his speech that in a few years people will ask themselves how they managed to live their lives without the aforementioned augmented reality. During the subsequent discussion with the students, he also highlighted artificial intelligence (AI). According to him, in the future this will become an elementary technology that will be part of our everyday life and will be reflected in the innovations of the Apple Watch and other products that the Cupertino giant is working on. This potential glimpse into the future appears wonderful at first glance. Augmented reality can really be the key to making our everyday lives easier and more pleasant. On the other hand, there are also serious concerns about the misuse of these technologies, especially in the field of artificial intelligence, which has been pointed out by a number of respected personalities in the past. Among the most famous, Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk have commented on the threat of artificial intelligence. According to them, AI can cause the destruction of humanity.
