The University of Wisconsin, or its patent arm, the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF), has won a lawsuit accusing Apple of infringing its patent. This concerned microprocessor technology, and Apple must pay a fine of 234 million dollars (5,6 billion crowns).

WARF she sued Apple at the beginning of last year. The California firm was said to be infringing its 7 microarchitecture patent in its A8, A8 and A1998X chips, and WARF was seeking $400 million in damages.

The jury has now decided that patent infringement did indeed occur, but fined Apple only $234 million. At the same time, according to court documents, it could grow up to 862 million dollars. The fine is also lower due to the fact that, according to the judge, the violation was not intentional.

"The decision is great news," he said Reuters WARF director Carl Gulbrandsen. For Apple, even so, 234 million represents one of the largest fines in patent proceedings.

Apple infringed the WARF patent in the iPhone 5S, 6 and 6 Plus, iPad Air and iPad mini 2, where the A7, A8 or A8X chips appeared. The iPhone maker declined to comment on the court's decision, but said it plans to appeal.
