Bill Stasior, who led the team responsible for Siri at Apple since 2012, has been relieved of his leadership position. This is one of the steps that the Cupertino company is taking as part of its strategic transition to long-term research instead of partial updates.

It is not yet known what position Stasior will hold after his departure. John Giannandrea, Apple's head of machine learning and artificial intelligence, plans to look for a new head of the Siri team, according to reports. However, no exact dates are known yet.

Bill Stasior was hired by Scott Forstall to lead the team responsible for the Siri assistant. He previously worked in Amazon's A9 division. Stasior was in charge of developing a unique artificial intelligence product, but in his work he also had to fight intensively with a constant tendency to focus more on Siri's search capabilities.

Steve Jobs, along with Scott Forstall, originally had a vision for Siri to do much more than just search the web or a device—her capabilities should be as close to human interaction as possible. But after Jobs's death, the mentioned vision slowly began to take hold.

Siri has made quite a lot of progress since it was officially introduced with the iPhone 4S, but it still lags behind competing assistants in many ways. Apple is now counting on Giannandrea to steer the Siri team in the right direction. Giannandrea, who made Apple's employees rich last year, has experience working in the field of artificial intelligence from Google.
