News from the world of applications

Apple's Cards app ends (September 10)

The Cards application, which Apple launched in the fall of 2011 to coincide with the introduction of the iPhone 4S, has been discontinued. It was a handy tool for creating and delivering your own postcards. Apple itself confirmed the termination of the service and commented on the whole fact as follows:

Postcards ordered before one o'clock in the afternoon on September 10, 2013 Pacific Time will be delivered and push notifications will remain functional. You can view your previous orders in the application in the "Saved Cards" section.

Instead of Cards, Apple recommends using its own iPhoto for Mac software. However, you can of course also use the iPhone and third-party applications, of which there are many in the App Store. In the Czech Republic, for example, a company offers the possibility of purchasing and subsequent delivery of a postcard Capturio, which provides an application of the same name.

Ubisoft is preparing Rayman Fiesta Run (September 11)

The well-known game studio Ubisoft has announced that it will release a new game title called Rayman Fiesta Run in the fall. It is a free sequel to the successful game Rayman Jungle Run and will be available for iOS, Android and Windows Phone 8 operating systems. The exact release date is not yet known.

As the name suggests, the game will be set in a pleasantly relaxing environment. The main character, Rayman, will be surrounded by food and ripe fruit, bouncing on cocktail umbrellas and getting in the way of alcohol-soaked limes. Rayman will be able to swim, dive and jump through 75 different levels in this environment. In the game, it will also be possible to start "Invasion mode" and players will also get new boss fights.

Realmac announced that Clear will be released as a new app for iOS 7 (11/9)

Developers from the Realmac Software group are known, among other things, for their intuitive, pleasant and very simple to-do application Clear. The latest announcement on this studio's blog is about this app. The developers decided to take advantage of the imminent arrival of iOS 7 and instead of the classic update, release a completely new version of Clear that will be adapted to this operating system.

Apple still doesn't allow developers to sell paid app updates. So when a developer decides that a new version of their app is too laborious and different to give away for free, they have to opt for such a clumsy solution. The old version of the given application is usually downloaded and a completely new application comes to the App Store instead at a new price. Realmac Software will solve the whole situation anyway. So if you plan to stick with iOS 6 and want to use the current Clear, you have one of the last chances to buy it. Details regarding the new version and its release date should appear on the developer's website soon.

Where's My Water 2

Where's My Water?, a very successful puzzle game from the world-famous Disney studio, has seen a second installment. Swampy the crocodile, who is the central character of the whole game, gained popularity all over the world, and the Disney developers later followed up on his success with Where's My Perry and Where's My Mickey.

In this new sequel, everything goes back to Swampy, and players get 100 new fun levels to pass the time pleasantly. However, everything has one big BUT. Unfortunately, even Disney has adapted to the market and comes with the hated "freemium" model. The game is already free to download from the App Store, but in order to play it fully you will probably need to make an in-app purchase.

Reeder 2

Silvio Rizzi, the developer behind the most popular RSS reader on iOS, released the second version of his app this week. This is not an update but a completely new application. In terms of features, the second version brings virtually nothing new. The main change is the design inspired by iOS 7. Reeder 2 got a "flat look", but kept its graphic scheme and face and can serve as a great example of redesigning an application for Apple's new operating system. Reeder originally worked as a client for Google Reader, after its termination it supports most popular RSS services - Feedbin, Feedly, Feed Wrangler, Feever, Readability and a local RSS service without synchronization. This time the application is universal, so for one price you get a version for both iPhone and iPad.

calendars 5

Productivity software developer Readdle has released the fifth version of its Calendars app. It will offer a flat design inspired by iOS 7 and a number of functions that you will not find in other similar applications. Calendars 5 offers several calendar views – list, daily, weekly and monthly. On the iPhone, the weekly overview is solved in an unorthodox way, where the individual days are arranged vertically in a row. The application uses a similar way of entering events as Fantastical, i.e. the so-called "natural language". In the relevant field, just write in English "Meeting with Pavel tomorrow at two" and Calendars will convert this sentence into a finished event, including time, notes and place.

Another unique feature is the full integration of Reminders. Tasks are not only displayed in the calendar, but can also be completed and created. The application includes a dedicated task list for managing Reminders, so Calendars 5 is the first calendar application that was able to integrate a task list in this way (with the exception of Pocket Informant, which uses its own solution). Calendars is a universal app for both iPhone and iPad and is perfect for those looking for a calendar that integrates a CalDAV-enabled to-do list inspired by the flatter look of iOS 7.

Weapon Tactics

Czech game studio Bohemia Ineractive, authors of army simulators Operation Flashpoint a Arma released a new mobile game Arma Tactics (the game was recently released on Android as well). While the original Arma for PC was an FPS genre, the mobile offshoot is controlled from a third-person perspective. It is a turn-based strategy where you have to neutralize enemy terrorists and complete assigned tasks with a small team of soldiers. Arma has a reputation for good graphics and very realistic gameplay, so fans of this genre have a lot to look forward to. The game leaves quite a lot of freedom to the players, so it will be up to your strategic skills how you deal with the situations in the missions.

Important update

Teevee 2

The popular application for monitoring series from Czech creators has received its first major update. The main novelty is the possibility of marking watched episodes, thanks to which you can see from the main menu when the last episode that you haven't seen was broadcast. You can also sync this information, including the series list, across devices via iCloud. The entire user interface has also received a big change, which goes hand in hand with iOS 7 and focuses mainly on images and typography. You can find TeeVee 2 in the App Store for 0,89 €

Google Drive

Recently, Google has been unifying the design across applications, and now the Google Drive application has also come to the fore. The Google Drive client received a tabbed UI similar to Google Now. The application offers two options for viewing files in the cloud storage, and the search option is significantly more accessible compared to the previous version. The process of sharing files has also become simpler. However, nothing has changed in the editors for the Google Docs office suite. You can find Google Drive in the App Store free.

Instashare

Another successful Czech application Instashare for sharing files between devices came with several new interesting functions. First is clipboard sharing, which is ideal for moving text or web addresses between iOS and OS X. It's also possible to automatically save photos and videos to your picture library and receive files from multiple devices at once. Instashare is in the App Store for 0,89 €.
