News from the world of applications

Instagram will work more with 3D Touch, less with photo maps (September 7.9)

At Wednesday's presentation of new Apple products, Instagram introduced several new features for its application. Creating a gallery of the format "Stories" began Ian Spalter, Instagram's head of design, with one strong press of the application icon on the 3D Touch display of the iPhone 7. While taking a photo, also with a stronger press of the display, he tested the transition between the two-fold optical and larger digital zoom announced by the haptic response. After taking a photo from the picture he created Boomerang, which enables the Live Photos API. Then, when a reaction notification with a preview came to the iPhone, Spalter enlarged it again using the Peek 3D Touch display function. To take full advantage of the wider color range of the new iPhones' displays, Instagram is updating its entire range of filters.

What was not discussed on stage was the gradual disappearance of the bookmark with a photo map on the viewed profiles of Instagram users. Since the social network uses location marking in addition to classic hashtags, it was possible to view a map of the places where their pictures were taken on the profiles of other users. According to Instagram, this feature was underutilized. So they decided to scrap it and instead focus on other aspects of the app. The photo map remains available in the logged-in user's profile. The very possibility of marking the places where photos were taken will remain.

Microsoft is reportedly working on a competitor for Slack (September 6.9)

Slack is one of the most popular communication tools for teams, newsrooms, etc. It allows private, group and topic (groups within teams, "channels") conversations, easy file sharing and sending gifs thanks to support for GIPHY.

Microsoft is said to be working on the Skype Teams project, which should be able to do the same and more. A feature that many would miss in Slack would be, for example, "Threaded Conversations", where group conversations are not just a single sequence of messages, but individual messages can be answered in other sub-levels, as is possible for example with Facebook or Disqus.

Of course, Skype Teams would also take over the functionality of Skype, i.e. video calls and the possibility of planning online meetings would be added. File sharing would also include Office 365 and OneDrive integration. In terms of user interface, it should also be very similar to Slack.

Skype Teams is said to be currently being tested internally, and versions for Windows and web, iOS, Android and Windows Phone are planned.

Important update

Google Photos already works with Live Photos, converting them to GIFs

Live Photos are still not a format with very wide compatibility. The new version of the application solves this problem Google Photos, which converts moving Apple photos into plain GIF images or short videos.

Google already some time ago offered an application named Motion Stills, which offered this functionality. It will continue to be available.

Airmail has received new functions on iOS, it works better with notifications

The quality mail application Airmail for iPhone and iPad came with a relatively large update (our review here). It has learned to better synchronize notifications, so if you now read a notification on a Mac, it will disappear from your iPhone and iPad by itself. In addition, Airmail for iOS also comes with a brand new Apple Watch complication, Dynamic Type support, and smart notifications that take your location into account. Thanks to this, it will be possible to set the device to notify you of new emails, for example, only in the office.

Just like on Mac, Airmail on iOS can now delay the sending of an email and thus create space for its cancellation. The possibility of deeper integration with other third-party applications has also been added, thanks to which you will be able to automatically upload email attachments to iCloud and send the text to the Ulysses or Day One applications.

So Airmail has become a bit better again and its already very wide capabilities have grown even more. The update is of course free and you can already download it from the App Store.
