Write – A Beautiful Note Taking and Writing App

There are many note-taking apps on the App Store. Write is certainly among the more popular and powerful of them for several reasons. The application is reliable, well-designed, simple, but above all, it has several above-standard functions, such as Markdown support, synchronization via iCloud and Dropbox, or a handy extended keyboard with a unique cursor for moving between characters and words.

Write now also comes to Mac and is a truly worthy counterpart to its iOS siblings. The design is simple, elegant, and the layout of the individual elements of the application is nothing surprising. On the left side you will find a navigation bar with your documents and on the right a text editor window. There is also a full-screen and focus mode, which allows you to create in an environment free of any distracting elements.

Using the special icon "Aa" located in the upper left corner of the editor, the font, font size and line spacing can be adjusted. If you write in Rich Text mode, you can also use the popular "blogger" language Markdown. In addition, Write can preview HTML, so you can immediately check how your text written in Markdown will look on the web.

The process of working with the application is simple. After installation, all you have to do is move the suspect application to the VirusTotal Uploader window and the software will take care of the rest. It checks the application with more than fifty different antivirus methods and determines whether it is harmful or not.

VirusTotal Uploader you can free to download on the developer's website.

Important update

PDFExpert 5

PDF Expert 5, a highly capable PDF viewing and editing application from the Readdle development group, becomes universal with the new version 5.1. Until now, two different applications for iPhone and iPad existed in parallel side by side, but now Ukrainian developers have united their popular tool.

The PDF Expert 5 application is really excellent and has a number of advanced functions. Plus, it gets even better with every update. The latter includes, among other things, the function of unlimited scrolling. Thanks to this novelty, it is possible to browse through a PDF file as if it were a classic web page. No more distractions and delays between sheets, you will be able to scroll through the entire document from start to finish.

Updating the application also allows you to add hand drawings, manage pages or combine multiple PDF files into one. A big news is also support for calculations created in Adobe Acrobat or LiveCycle Designer. It is now also possible to mark individual files with colored markers and find your way around them better.

For owners of PDF Expert 5 for iPad, the update is completely free. However, the iPhone version lost its validity after this update and was pulled from the App Store, which may not please some of its users. If you do not yet own PDF Expert 5, it can be downloaded for €8,99 from the App Store.

Reeder 2

Reeder 2, the most famous and probably the best RSS reader for iOS, has been updated to version 2.2. It brings many fixes, improvements and news. An important innovation is, for example, the possibility of background updates, thanks to which you can have new articles ready when you open the application. The built-in browser has also been improved and now finally shows the page load status. Smart subscriptions now support sorting by source and by date, and the application can now also deal with links to the source taken from another application.

Fixed an issue with the functionality of multiple parallel accounts in Feedly and fixed some visual bugs appearing in different color schemes.

Reeder 2 is available in a universal version for iPhone and iPad for €4,49. After almost a year, the desktop version of this reader has also returned to the Mac App Store. You can download it here for a price 8,99 €.

Rdio

The Swedish music streaming service Rdio has also received an update and comes with one big new feature – push notifications. With your phone or tablet, you can now be notified if some music is shared with you, your playlist gets a new subscriber, another user starts following you, and so on. The application allows you to set the notification to your liking and thus be notified only of some selected activities.

Google Play Music

The iOS version of the Google Play Music application was not left behind either. It now allows you to edit playlists directly in the application. Until now, you had to log in to the web interface of the service for any changes in the music lists. Other new features include, for example, the ability to shuffle artists or filter out only the music you've downloaded.

 Vesper

Vesper is basically an enhanced version of the native iOS 7 “Notes” app. It's a simple utility designed by John Gruber's company for writing down whatever comes to mind. It differs only in design (yellow is replaced by light blue) and a few added functions - the ability to insert images into notes (at Apple, this option is supported only by the Mac version, images are not transferred to iOS devices) and the use of tags, which we then see in the sidebar as “folders” (similar to the Finder in OS X Mavericks).

The only problem with Vesper was that it couldn't work with iCloud or any of its alternatives, so your notes were only stored on a specific iPhone, not backed up to the cloud, and inaccessible from other devices. And it was this ailment that Vesper got rid of in her second version. Backup and synchronization now works and relies on its own cloud solution.

You can download the Vesper note app from  AppStore for €4,49. A Mac version is also planned, but there are no details on its release date yet.

Accomplish

Acompli is a popular application for working with email and calendar. The most important capabilities of this application include a sophisticated search system, work with various filters, practical labeling and sorting of emails or advanced management of email attachments. The connection with the calendar is primarily a means of quickly sharing events after they have been created.

Until now, the application supported Microsoft Exchange, Google Apps and Gmail, and the update also adds support for iCloud email, contacts and calendars, as well as three email services from Microsoft - Hotmail, Outlook and Live.com.

Quip - Documents + Messaging

Quip is an alternative to Google Docs and similar services enabling online collaborative work on text documents across platforms (iOS devices, Mac, PC). It displays active participants, can create shared folders, has integrated chat, allows mentioning users (@user) and documents, and offline creation of documents and messages, which are then sent to the cloud as soon as an Internet connection is available. It has become so successful that it is also used by companies such as Facebook, New Relic, Instagram, etc.

Now the service/app has been updated and version 2.0. This brings the possibility to define accessibility - a person with the relevant link/knowledge of the document name can be allowed to edit, comment or just view the document. Plus, you don't need to have the app installed to view.

The new search is basically an added bar on the iOS keyboard that shows filters and possible documents/people. The possibility to export a document to Microsoft Word .doc format is also new. In the future, it is planned to expand the possible types of documents, such as "excel" tables. Quip you can free download in the App Store.

Songkick

Songkick is a service alerting its users to concerts of their favorite musical groups, whether based on manually entered names, music collection on iOS devices or playlists from Spotify. Alerts are based on your preferred locations.

The application also mediates ticket purchases. The new version of the iOS application adds a "recommended" tab, where we can find concerts by artists who are similar to those in our playlist/whose concert we have been to.
