News from the world of applications

Flexbright wanted to provide an alternative to night mode. Apple ticked it off for her (March 7)

The main news iOS 9.3 will be night mode, which reduces the amount of blue light emitted by the display, which has a positive effect on the speed of falling asleep and the quality of sleep of the user of the given device. When programming this function, Apple was certainly inspired by the pioneer in the fight against unhealthy display glare, the f.lux application. Its developers also created a version for iOS, but it had to be installed through the Xcode developer tool, and Apple soon denied it the necessary access to the system anyway.

This week, an application offering the same functionality appeared directly in the App Store. Although Flexbright had a strange user interface and could not change the color of the display smoothly, but only in jumps through notifications, it worked even on devices with iOS 7 and iOS 8 and even on those without 64-bit architecture. But Flexbright didn't warm up in the App Store for long.

The app disappeared from the App Store not long after its launch, without any explanation from Apple. For now, it looks like those who want to change the type of light emitted by the display on their iOS devices will have to install iOS 9.3, or buy a newer device with a 64-bit processor.

The latest version of Opera has a built-in ad blocker (10.)

Opera is the first of the "major" desktop browsers to come with a directly built-in option to block ads on websites. Its advantage over plug-ins is that there is no need to install third-party software and that blocking takes place at the engine level, which a plug-in is not capable of. This allows Opera to block ads much more effectively. According to the browser's developers, the new feature can speed up page loading by up to 90% compared to normal browsers and 40% compared to browsers with an ad-blocking plug-in installed.

Opera writes in a press release that it realizes that advertising has an essential role in generating profit for content creators on today's Internet, but at the same time, it does not want the website to become cumbersome and user-unfriendly. So, in the new blocker, it also included the ability to see how much influence ads and tracking scripts have on page load speed. The user can also have an overview of how many ads have been blocked on a given website and in general on a given day of the week and for the entire time of using the browser.

The developer version of Opera with this update is available now.

Cryptomator encrypts data before uploading to the cloud

Developer Tobias Hagemann has been working on a data encryption app since 2014. The result of his efforts is Cryptomator, an app for both iOS and OS X that encrypts data before sending it to the cloud, making it impossible for it to be stolen and misused.

Cryptomator is an open source project and its use on Apple devices is limited only by the need to have data stored locally in addition to the cloud, which most popular services (Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, etc.) fulfill.

For encryption, Cryptomator uses AES, an advanced encryption standard with a 256-bit key. Encryption already occurs on the client side.

Cryptomator is for iOS available for 1,99 euros and for OS X for voluntary price.

Important update

Google Photos can now deal with Live Photos

Google Photos, a quality software for backing up and organizing photos, has gained the ability to work with Live Photos with its latest update. The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus have been able to take these "live pictures" since their release. However, too many web repositories still cannot cope with their full-fledged backup. So the support from Google is something that users will definitely appreciate. Unlike iCloud, Google provides unlimited space for photos with a lower resolution.

Google Docs and Sheets now look better on iPad Pro

Google Apps Docs a sheets got interesting updates. They added support for the high resolution of the iPad Pro display. Unfortunately, multitasking from iOS 9 is still missing, i.e. Slide Over (covering the main application with a smaller one) and Split View (full-fledged multitasking with a split screen). In addition to the optimization for iPad Pro, Google Docs was also enriched with a character counter.

Wikipedia for iOS comes with support for new features and revolves around discovery

The official iOS application of the internet encyclopedia also got a brand new version Wikipedia. The new one focuses primarily on content discovery and aims to expand your horizons beyond just searching for passwords. The new application has a much more modern look and supports 3D Touch as well as searching through the Spotlight system search engine. Owners of the giant iPad Pro will be pleased that the application is also adapted to its display. Support for Slit View or Slide Over is missing for now.

As for that discovery, Wikipedia will offer the reader an interesting collage of articles on the new main screen, among which you will find the most read article of the day, picture of the day, random article and articles related to your current location. Then, once you start actively using Wikipedia, you will also see a selection of articles that are somehow related to the terms you have already searched on the main screen marked "Explore".

Google Chrome for iOS has a new bookmark view

Google Web Browser for iOS, Chrome, has moved to version 49 and brings one new feature. This is a modified user interface of bookmarks, which should enable faster orientation in them.

The Google Drive application was also updated with news in the form of an accessible trash can in the iOS application and the ability to change folder colors. At least this is what the description of the update provides. But the application does not yet contain any of that. It is therefore possible that the news will become apparent over time and come in the form of a change to the server background of the application.

The Pebble Time watch received a revised iOS application and improved firmware

A new application for managing smart watches Pebble Time received a major update and a completely new user interface. The application is newly divided into three tabs labeled Watchfaces, Apps and Notifications, which makes it possible to easily and clearly manage watch faces, applications and individual notifications. The developers have also worked on the localization of the application into new languages, so that the application can already be used in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.

As for the updated watch firmware, it is primarily adapted to work properly with the new iOS app and its handy notification manager. Then only support for giant emoticons was added. After all, every Pebble Time user can see for himself by sending or receiving a lone smiley.
