It is not for nothing that they say "know your enemy". The Apple Watch is the best-selling watch in the world, while the Galaxy Watch4 is supposed to be its direct competition. Tizen failed to use the potential of smart watches in connection with Android devices to the maximum, so Samsung teamed up with Google to create watchOS. But does his watch really have the potential to dethrone Apple's?

At the outset, it must be said that the Apple Watch has a really solid position. Maybe it's not even the intention of the Galaxy Watch4 to dethrone them, maybe they just want to fit in with the real and only real competition that the Apple Watch otherwise simply doesn't have. The previous generation of Samsung smart watches, which ran on Tizen, can also be connected to iPhones. However, this is not possible with the Galaxy Watch4 series. Just as the Apple Watch can only be used with iPhones, the Galaxy Watch4 and Galaxy Watch4 Classic can only be connected to Android devices. So not only Samsungs, but any smartphone that installs the appropriate application from Google Play.

Design

In 2015, Apple established a clear look for its Apple Watch, which it sticks to even after seven years. It only slightly enlarges the case and the display. Samsung did not want to copy it and came out to meet lovers of the classic watch look - the Galaxy Watch4 therefore has a round case. As with the Apple Watch, Samsung sells it in several sizes. The variant we tested has a diameter of 46 mm.

Apple has been experimenting with color lately. With its Classic model, Samsung is more down to earth and based again on the classic world of watches. So there is only a choice of black and silver version in 42 and 46 mm versions with and without LTE. The price in the official Samsung Online Store starts at 9 CZK.

Straps

Apple is a master of originality. His straps can't be completely ordinary in order to make extra money selling accessories. You don't have to deal with this at Samsung. If you need to replace the belt, you can just use any other one with a width of 20 mm. You can also change it yourself, thanks to the speed lifts. But it is necessary, because on a wrist with a diameter of 17,5 cm, the supplied silicone one is pleasant, but thanks to the cut-out to fit the case exactly, it is simply large. You will not encounter this with the Apple Watch, it is because the case has no legs and you insert the strap directly into it. Google's upcoming Pixel Watch will solve it in a similar way, even if they won't have a square case.

Control

If we don't mention touchscreens, Apple Watch is the crown jewel. It is supplemented with a button below it, but it offers limited use, especially for switching between applications or your favorites (and taking screenshots, of course). With the crown, you go through the menu, scroll through menus, zoom in and out, but you can also press it, which is used to switch to the application layout and return back.

Compared to the same model without the "classic" moniker, the Galaxy Watch4 Classsic has a physical rotating bezel (the Galaxy Watch4 model has a software one). After all, it is also based on the history of the watchmaking world, especially the diving world. On the other hand, they do not have a crown, which the bezel replaces. It also has added value in that it extends beyond the display, thus protecting it from damage.

The bezel is then completed with two buttons on their right side. The upper one takes you back to the watch face from anywhere, the lower one takes you back only one step. What is the advantage here? Simply because you often get rid of one extra press of the crown and the work is thus faster. Also, most of the time, the Apple Watch does not make use of the crown rotation. But once you rotate the bezel while viewing the watch face, you'll see tiles, which are shortcuts to various functions, whether it's taking an EKG or just starting an activity. So you don't have to search for the appropriate applications or run them out of complications.

A person using an Apple Watch gets used to it really quickly, without any labor pains. Subjectively, it seems to me that the control of the Galaxy Watch4 is perfected to the last detail. And yes, better, as is the case with the Apple Watch. After a while, you just wave your hand at the absence of a crown. But we are talking about the Classic model, which has a physical bezel. There is a question of what Samsung is planning for the Galaxy Watch5 generation, which is to lose not only the Classic moniker and replace it with the Pro designation, but is also to come with that bezel and only the software one should remain. It doesn't make sense, because that bezel is Samsung's clear trump card.
