Another weekend flew by and we have prepared for you today, as on every other weekday, an IT summary of the past day (and weekend). At the very beginning, we will please you in a way, but also not please you with the dark mode for the Facebook application on the iPhone. In the next news, we will stay with Facebook - we will talk a little more about why some companies are boycotting it, then we will look together at the improvements in the Google Meet application. In addition, we will look at an interesting service thanks to which you can get an SSL certificate for your website absolutely free. So let's get straight to the point.

Facebook and Dark Mode

It's been a few weeks back since we informed you that Facebook has finally rolled out a dark mode, if you will, for its web app in addition to a new design. The new look of Facebook is much more modern, cleaner and, above all, faster than the old one. Unfortunately, users still haven't seen the dark mode inside the Facebook app, but that is currently changing. For the first users, the option to (de)activate dark mode was displayed in the Facebook application. Facebook is perhaps the last social network that has not yet introduced its dark mode in the application. It should be noted that, as with other new features from Facebook, the dark mode is also being gradually released. For now, only a handful of Facebook users have the option to set dark mode. Gradually, however, the dark mode should reach all users.

Unfortunately, in this case, there is no way to speed up the arrival of dark mode to your app - not even a forced update will help. For example, if one of your friends can already set the dark mode on Facebook and you still can't, then there is no reason to get angry. Of course, the news will find its way to you sooner or later. Unfortunately, dark mode on Facebook changes the background color to gray or dark gray, not completely black. This means that, although the eyes will be relieved in the evening and at night, unfortunately there will be no energy saving on OLED displays, which display the black color with the pixels turned off. If you want to make sure that you already have dark mode available, in the Facebook application, click on the icon of three horizontal lines at the bottom right, then scroll down and finally click on the option Settings and privacy. There should already be a Dark Mode column here, or a Dark mode, in which you can set it.

Some companies are boycotting Facebook

As I mentioned in the introduction, we will stay with Facebook even in the case of the second news. You may have already noticed on the Internet that Facebook has received a huge wave of criticism in recent days. Unfortunately, this is due to the hateful and racist expressions that appear on this social network. It should be noted that this is currently a very hot topic, which could be compared to a wasp's nest - information about the protests (which gradually turned into looting) not only in the United States, you certainly did not miss. Facebook doesn't make much of an effort to regulate racist speech in any way, which some big advertisers don't like. Facebook is losing millions of dollars because of this. Among the companies that have decided to temporarily suspend or completely end advertising campaigns on Facebook, we can name, for example, the gigantic American operator Verizon, in addition, Facebook is boycotting, for example, Starbucks, Ben & Jerry's, Pepsi, Patagonia or The North Face and many others. We'll see if Facebook takes some action and gets its advertisers back - it's expected that it will, and Facebook will soon introduce a new feature that will automatically filter out hateful and racist speech.

Improvements in Google Meet

The coronavirus has been with us in the world for several long months. Due to the fact that the coronavirus is deadly, various countries of the world decided to create various measures, which in some cases even recommended staying at home only and appearing in public only in extreme cases, in order to prevent the spread of this virus as much as possible. Reasonable people of course respected the regulation and still respect it in the current situation. During this difficult time when people couldn't meet with their families or friends, various services and applications that can connect you with people online using a web camera and a microphone have gained popularity. Schools that had to switch to online teaching also decided to use these services and applications. One of the most popular applications (especially in schools) is Google Meet. It got a big update today. Great functions have been added to the application, which you may know from similar applications - for example, the ability to blur or replace the background. In addition, users received a special mode in low light, when the image "lights up", after which up to 49 users can connect in one call. Of course there are more functions, these are the main ones.

Free SSL certificate for your website

If you run a website these days, it is very important that you have it secured with an SSL certificate. It doesn't necessarily mean that the website is not secure without it, but the user feels a lot better when there is a green lock with the text Secured in the address bar. There are several services that allow you to get an SSL certificate - the best-known is the free Let's Encrypt, but there are several paid alternatives - or you can use the new ZeroSSL service, which offers a three-month certificate for free, after which you can buy a year as a subscription. This is certainly an interesting option for "webbers" and if there is someone like that among us, they can definitely use the services ZeroSSL look
