The Finder is an important and useful part of the macOS operating system that many of us work with on a daily basis. The Finder itself consists of a number of parts, each of which offers a lot of possibilities for use, work and customization. In today's article, we will focus on the sidebar in the native Finder window in macOS.

Customization

If for whatever reason you don't like the default look of the native Finder sidebar, you can customize it to some extent. With Finder running, click Finder -> Preferences from the menu bar at the top of your Mac screen, and click the Sidebar tab at the top of the preferences window. Here you can set which items will appear in the Finder sidebar.

Adding apps to the sidebar

Among other things, the Finder sidebar on your Mac can also include application icons, allowing you to work even faster and more efficiently. To place an application icon in the Finder sidebar, simply hold down the Cmd key and drag the icon into place. Click on the icon to start the given application, and if you want to run the selected file in the given application, just drag it to the icon.

Options for working with labels

You probably know that you can assign labels to items in the Finder. You can also work with these tags further. If you right-click a selected marker in the Finder sidebar, you can rename it, remove it from the panel, or perform other actions available in the menu. If you want to open files marked with this tag in a new window instead of a new tab, right-click the tag and hold down the Option (Alt) key. Then click on Open in new window in the menu.

Adding items from iCloud to the sidebar

If you have folders in iCloud that you work with frequently, you'll definitely find it useful to have them located right in the Finder sidebar so you can access them instantly at any time. In the Finder sidebar, click iCloud Drive, then in the main application window, select the folder you want to place in the sidebar. Hold down the Command key and simply drag the selected folder to the Finder sidebar.

Hide sidebar

Most of you probably know that the sidebar in the Finder can be easily and quickly hidden, but just to be sure, we will also mention this procedure here. To hide the Finder sidebar on a Mac, click Show in the menu bar at the top of the screen. In the menu that appears, click on Hide sidebar.
