The new major version of the Things task book has been talked about for months. In the end, it looks like the developers at Cultured Code have decided to gradually work towards Things 3. The latest version for iPhone finally brings a new graphic environment in line with current trends and also support for the news in iOS 8.

These aren't groundbreaking changes to the popular app, which has kept its users engaged despite its woefully slow development, but it's still a fairly significant step forward. Until now, Things looked like applications from 2012, when iOS 6 with its textures was still up to date. Now, the task manager interface is finally flat and clean, so it fits with the latest version of iOS.

Functionally and content-wise, the interface remains identical, only the graphic elements (including the main application icon) and fonts have been modified. Finally, we can also use the swipe back gesture for easier navigation, and even the keyboard from the old system will no longer haunt Things on the iPhone.

Along with support for background sync, where you no longer need to manually open Things to keep up-to-date tasks on your iPhone as well, it all feels like we're talking about an update sometime last year, but the dev team at Cultured Code is really just now catching up.

Also new is the "Add to Things" expansion button we're talking about they wrote at the beginning of September. In iOS 8, it is now possible through the sharing system menu, for example, to simply save a page open in Safari to Things as a new task without having to leave Safari.

However, we are still talking about version 2.5, which is now available in the App Store, but does not bring any significant changes. Things have looked the same for several years, which should change only with the arrival of the third version. The developers here last December they promised for 2014, but the reality may not be so rosy. Cultured Code admitted on their blog that Things 3 is still nowhere near ready for distribution and they are only going to start beta testing at the end of November. Originally, the graphic redesign was supposed to be part of the third version, but so that users don't have to wait any longer, the developers hastened this part of the changes.

For the iPhone version, we can expect another minor update in the near future that will bring support for another new feature in iOS 8 – the Things view in the Notification Center, where you can see current tasks and check them off as completed.

Similar changes to the version for the iPhone are also planned for the iPad, but in terms of graphics they will not be so big. The developers also intend to modify the Mac version of Things before the release of OS X Yosemite, they will provide more information next month, when the new operating system for computers is also expected to be released.

The work on Things 3 is obviously proceeding very slowly, and considering the current state of development, it is not very likely that we will see the final version this year.
