Measuring body temperature was supposed to be one of the essential functions that the upcoming Apple Watch Series 8 will bring. This is a really beneficial function that is also useful in the post-covid era, because various diseases that are manifested precisely by variations in body temperature are trying to attack us today and everyday. But bad luck, the thermometer will not come to the Apple Watch until next year with the Series 9.

Apple is said to have failed to fine-tune all the algorithms so that its watch measures body temperature with acceptable deviations, so it cut the feature completely until it was satisfied with its results. Of course, it does not necessarily have to be a medically certified function, even indicative values are beneficial in this case, but obviously even the watch prototypes did not reach them.

Fitbit and Amazfit

On the market, various companies are already trying their luck with measuring body temperature. This is mainly the Fitbit brand, which incidentally was bought by Google in 2021, which should soon introduce its Pixel Watch, which is also expected to measure body temperature. Fitbit sense are therefore smart watches priced at around CZK 7, which, apart from others, also offer a skin temperature sensor on the wrist.

So they record the temperature of your skin and show you deviations from your baseline values, thanks to which you can follow the evolution of the temperature over time. First, you have to wear them for three days so that they form an average, from which you can then get pierced. But as you can see, we are not talking about body temperature, but skin temperature. It really won't be that simple to debug all the algorithms that calculate in some way with the ambient temperature.

But it's about bringing something extra, and that's what Fitbit has done, and it doesn't really matter how effective it is when there's information that these are only indicative values. Of course, it has more advantages, because apart from catching incoming diseases, the body temperature will also alert you to internal changes in the body. However, you can manually enter values into the Fitbit watch if you measure your temperature using other methods, and it will give you different results. The fitness bracelet also offers similar functionality to that of Fitbit Sense Fitbit Charge 5.

Amazfit is a company founded in 2015 and owned by Zepp Health. Model Amazonfit GTR 3 Pro at a price of about 5 thousand CZK, it has practically the same functionality as Fitbit's solution. So you would expect that the manufacturer should proudly announce it to the world, but even here you have to wade through the specifications to see if the watch can do the function or not. Nothing from the current portfolio offers a fundamental game changer, only "something like body temperature measurement".

A clear vision of the future

The last two years have clearly shown us the importance of similar wearables. Their meaning is unmistakable, and it is not about showing notifications from a mobile phone at all. Their future is precisely in health functions. It's a shame that even the two years of the pandemic could not give the engineers enough time for us to see a truly usable model that will not only measure as a guide.
