TVs from Sony received support for AirPlay 2 and HomeKit today

Sony today released the Android 9 Pie software update for select models of its smart TVs. The latest update adds support for the AirPlay 2 standard and the HomeKit platform. Sony thus fulfills the promise it made to its customers earlier this year.

Owners of the A9F and Z9F models from 2018 will receive the update, as well as owners of the A9G, Z9G, X950G models (with a screen size of 55, 65, 75 and 85 inches) from 2019. Thanks to support for AirPlay 2 technology, users will be able to stream video, music, photos and other content directly from their iPhone, iPad or Mac to their Sony smart TVs. Support for the HomeKit platform will allow users to easily control the TV using Siri commands and in the Home application on iPhone, iPad or Mac.

The corresponding software update is (for now) available to customers in the United States, Canada, and Latin America, with no word yet on availability in Europe or other regions. But the update should certainly gradually spread to other areas of the world.

Users who want to update the software on their TV must press the "HELP" button on the remote control and then select "System software update" on the screen. If they don't see the update, you need to enable automatic update checking. After performing this step, when an update is available, the user will be notified on the screen.

Sony is not the only manufacturer that started to support AirPlay 2 and the HomeKit platform on its TVs earlier this year – TVs from Samsung, LG and even Vizio also offer support.
