Apple is currently working on Swift 5.0. This is a major update to the programming language that the company first introduced in 2014. In preparation for this update, project manager Ted Kremenek sat down with John Sundell on his podcast. On that occasion, we learned more about the news that Swift 5.0 will bring.

Ted Kremenek works at Apple as a senior manager for languages and program execution. He is tasked with overseeing the release of Swift 5 and also acts as the spokesperson for the entire project. In Sundell's podcast, he talked about topics such as the new features that Apple plans to include in the new Swift and the fifth generation in general.

Swift 5 should primarily focus on the long-awaited implementation of ABI (Application Binary Interfaces) stability. In order to implement this stability and full functionality, significant changes need to be implemented in Swift. Thanks to this, Swift 5 will allow the linking of an application built in one version of the Swift compiler with a library built in another version, which was not possible until now.

Swift was created in 2014 and is used to develop applications for iOS, macOS, watchOS and tvOS. But the beginnings of Swift development date back to 2010, when Chris Lattner started working on it. Four years later, Swift was introduced at WWDC. The relevant documentation is available, for example, at Books. Apple is trying to bring Swift closer to the public, both through workshops and educational programs, as well as, for example, with the help of the Swift Playgrounds application for iPad. The corresponding podcast is available at iTunes.
