Press Release: Western Digital last week at its online conference Flash Perspective introduced a new integrated flash memory platform for the UFS 3.1 (Universal Flash Storage) standard. New solutions will make work and fun easier for mobile device applications, the automotive industry, the Internet of Things, AR/VR realities, drones and other growing segments that are changing the way we live.

Western Digital UFS 3-1

In a growing mobile world that is always "on", always connected and always available, Western Digital's unique platform provides UFS 3.1 in the JEDEC specification standard UFS 3.1 the speed, reliability and future versatility that customers count on to produce small, slim and light solutions. With the power of vertical integration capabilities to optimize NAND technology, firmware, driver solutions, software and other drivers, Western Digital can effectively design tailor-made solutions for a variety of markets, including mobile technology, IoT, automotive and other market segments – while strengthening the UFS architecture 3.1. This new platform sets new benchmarks and is expected to deliver sequential write performance improvements of up to 90% compared to the previous generation. This improvement will help harness the potential of 5G and Wi-Fi 6 upload speeds for data transfer and bring better data handling and a higher experience when playing media files such as 8K video, while also improving performance for applications such as burst mode.

"We're only just touching the surface today of what services, technologies and devices will be available in the mobile world, but one thing is clear, flash storage will be the key to success," says Huibert Verhoeven, Western Digital's vice president of automotive, mobile solutions and the growing flash business, adding: “With our new UFS platform. 3.1 we open up new opportunities that didn't exist before. We are excited to continue working with our customers to help them design solutions and to provide added value and differentiation to those solutions.”

Western Digital already manufactures products based on this platform. First, it comes with a new product line for mobile and customer applications. At the same time, it works with hardware partners in its ecosystem and prepares products for use in their upcoming solutions. The products of the new platform are expected to be launched in the second half of 2021.
