If you use more than one monitor, you've probably experienced the cursor getting lost somewhere on the second monitor. This problem is also solved by a simple application EdgeCase, which creates a barrier on the edges of the monitors so that the cursor does not run away from you.
EdgeCase ensures that the transition between individual monitors is impenetrable - that is, in order to move the cursor to the other monitor, you will either have to press the selected key, wait half a second, or swipe the cursor over the edge twice. The fact that you don't automatically get to the second monitor will make it easier to work with active corners, which are suddenly easier to access, and it's also easier to control elements on the edges of the display, such as sliders.
The application itself is completely undemanding. After starting, it settles in the menu bar, from where you can control everything important. In fact, EdgeCase can't do anything else. In the menu, you can check the automatic start of the application when logging in, as well as its temporary deactivation. There are three ways to get to the second monitor - either by pressing CMD or CTRL, with a half-second delay, or by bouncing off the edge of the display and swiping again. You can choose one or all three methods at once.
Although EdgeCase is a relatively simple application, it is available in the Mac App Store for less than four euros, which can be a slight obstacle. However, if you regularly work with multiple monitors, the EdgeCase will probably be worth it.

And isn't there a utility to completely turn off the macbook monitor when I use a large external one? I don't need both of them, so I always just dim the brightness, but it seems unnecessary for it to be turned on at all...
Just close your Mac :)
For this, however, an external keyboard and mouse/trackpad are needed.
Exactly, I use the mac as a keyboard and trackpad (I have it inserted under the main monitor) - the macbook display runs completely useless - I don't want to close it (even for cooling).
the cooling works even when it is closed, I have it verified :D 3 hours of work in the final cut at 60 degrees :D
I also solved this problem and I came to the fact that the only possible way is to have a macbook with a mouse and ext. keyboard connected to ext. monitor, then you can close the lid without going to sleep
Those who use Lion probably don't work with multiple displays, because it doesn't quite work ;) but probably no application solves that yet.
Are you running into full-screen apps? Not everyone uses them.
Well, that's possible... for me basically fullscreen apps and spaces with the ability to move using gestures fully replace the multi-monitor system ;) so I'm personally satisfied. However, even then it is not solved happily if I wanted to use fullscreen apps and multiple monitors, it just doesn't work very well.
??
Lion and three displays… no hiccups.
If you don't use spaces and full-screen apps, then yes ;)
