The basic idea behind activating Family Sharing is to give other household members access to Apple services such as Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade or iCloud storage. iTunes or App Store purchases can also be shared. The principle is that one pays and everyone else uses the product. With Family Sharing, you can easily share your location with other family members in the Messages and Find Friends apps. And with Find My iPhone, you can help them find their lost device. If you have an Apple Watch with watchOS 6, use the Find People app.

The principle is simple

Family Organizer turns on location sharing in the Family Sharing settings. After turning on the function, his location is automatically shared with other members of the family group. Each member can then decide if they want to share their location as well. When sharing is enabled, other family members will see the member's location in the Find Friends and Messages apps. If a family member is using iOS 13 or later, they can see your location in the Find My app. If it has watchOS 6, it will see your location in the Find People app. You will also see their location.

If you have location sharing turned on and your device is lost or stolen, other family members can help you find it in the Find My iPhone app. If a family member has iOS 13 or later, you can ask them to use the Find My app. However, location sharing is also region dependent and is not available globally. In some places, it is prohibited by local laws (e.g. in South Korea).

Location sharing settings

In Family Sharing, you can choose when you want to share your location with your family. You can find out if you have location sharing turned on in Settings -> your name -> Share my location. Here you can tap on a family member's name and share your location with them right away.

If you want to stop sharing your location, turn off Share my location. This will hide your location from all family members and approved friends. When you want to start sharing it again, you can turn this option back on.

By default, the device where you signed in to Family Sharing shares your location. If you want to share your location from another device, k Tap Settings -> your name -> Family sharing -> Location sharing -> Share my location -> Sharing source and select the device you want to share your location from.

Location sharing and Find My iPhone

When you join Family Sharing and choose to share your location with other family members, they can find and secure your lost device.

If you have Find My iPhone turned on on your lost device, other family members have the following options:

  • They can view his location and see if he is online or offline.
  • They can play a sound on your lost device to help you find it.
  • If a passcode is set on the device, they can put the device into lost mode.
  • They can remotely wipe the device.

If you don't share your location, your family can't access your devices' location information. Other family members can help you even without location information. They can see if a device is online or offline, play audio on it, put it into lost mode, or wipe it remotely. Before a family member can erase a device, the device owner must enter the password for the Apple ID signed in to the device being erased.
