The magnetic MagSafe connector is undoubtedly one of the best iPhone gadgets of the last two years. It can be used for a whole range of things, especially charging. This is precisely its greatest strength, as it allows iPhones to be "fed" wirelessly at 15W instead of the standard 7,5W that phones use during normal wireless charging. In addition to charging, magnets can be used for fixation  to various holders that are supposed to "hold" the phones exactly where the user needs them. And we will look at the combination of the MagSafe holder with the charger in the following lines. A MagSafe car charger holder from the Swissten workshop arrived at our editorial office for testing.

Technical Specifications

The holder is made of plastic and its surface is rubberized in the place where the phone touches it, which ensures an even better grip. In the car, you attach it specifically to the ventilation grill using "tweezers" for the thread on its back side, which can be pulled down really tightly and thanks to this, there is no risk that the holder will be torn out of it. As for its tilts to the sides, they are possible thanks to the round joint between the mounting arm and the charging body of the holder itself. The joint is secured by a plastic thread, which always needs to be loosened when turning – so this is again a fastening system to ensure that the phone attached to the holder will move very little.

As for powering the holder, this is ensured specifically by a 1,5 m long integrated cable with a USB-C end, which must be inserted into the car charger. In order to use the maximum potential of the holder, which is the aforementioned 15W wireless charging, it is of course necessary to use a sufficiently powerful charger – in our case it was the Swissten Power Delivery USB-C+SuperCharge 3.0 with a power of 30W. If you did not use a sufficiently powerful charger, charging would be significantly slower, but at least 5W.

The price of the Swissten MagSafe car holder is 889 CZK before the discount, the price of the aforementioned car charger is 499 CZK. However, both of these products can be purchased with up to 25% off - you can find out more at the end of this review.

Processing and design

Evaluating design is always a purely subjective matter and therefore I will really only address it briefly. However, I have to say for myself that I am really happy with the design of the holder, because it has a nice, minimalistic feel. The combination of black and silver is quite lost in the dark interior of the car, due to which the bracket is not very prominent. As for the processing, I don't think it's bad at all. I would have much preferred to see an aluminum frame for the holder instead of a plastic silver one, but I understand that when trying to keep production costs as low as possible, it is necessary to save on all fronts - including here.

Testing

I tested the holder with the iPhone 13 Pro Max, which is the heaviest iPhone with MagSafe support and thus logically also the biggest stress test for a similar product. As for the location, I attached the holder with "tweezers" in the classic way to the ventilation grill in the center panel of the vehicle, because that's where I'm used to looking at the navigation. But of course you can place it on the left next to the steering wheel if you prefer it there. Attaching the holder as such to the car's ventilation grill is a matter of a few tens of seconds. All you have to do is slide the pliers in sufficiently, then make sure that the lower and upper stop rests on the individual grids (to ensure the highest possible stability) and then just tighten the thread on them. I admit that at first I did not fully believe that such a solution could sufficiently fix the relatively large bracket in the car's grille, but now I have to say that my fears were unnecessary. When tightened thoroughly, it holds in the grid like a nail. After fixing it in the grid, all you have to do is play with the direction of the holder and you're done.

I was a little surprised that even if you insert the "tweezers" into the ventilation grill as far as it will go, the arm with the holder still sticks out quite a bit. Personally, I have used classic magnetic "pucks" up to now, which were de facto lying on the grid and therefore you hardly noticed them in the interior of the car. This MagSafe holder is also inconspicuous, but compared to magnetic "pucks" it protrudes much more into the interior of the car. With greater projection into space, the stability of the holder and the phone in it goes hand in hand. Simply put, he no longer has anything to lean on and thus has to rely only on fixation on the holder. And that's what I was really afraid of. The arm that holds the holder in the grid is definitely not one of the massive ones, and that's why I was a little doubtful about whether it can provide the holder with sufficient stability even after attaching the phone. Fortunately, it was enough for me to put a few kilometers behind the wheel to confirm that there would be no problem with stability. As soon as you attach the iPhone to the holder via MagSafe, it literally holds on to it like a nail, and if you're not driving on a tank track, the holder practically doesn't move with the phone in the grid, so you still have a good view of the navigation.

Charging is also reliable. As I already wrote above, I used the Power Delivery USB-C + SuperCharge 3.0 30W charging adapter from Swissten as a source for the holder, which works really flawlessly with the MagSafe holder. I also like the fact that, thanks to its miniature dimensions, it fits nicely into the cigarette lighter and almost does not protrude from it, so it again has an inconspicuous impression in the car. And thanks to its 30W, you probably won't be surprised that I was able to charge the iPhone at full speed - i.e. 15W, which in my opinion is a really great benefit when driving a car.

Then if you're wondering about the magnetic connection between the iPhone and the holder, I have to say that it's really strong - to put it mildly, stronger than what the MagSafe Wallet with iPhone offers, for example. Yes, of course I was afraid of the phone falling while driving at first, because the 13 Pro Max is already a solid brick, but even when I drove through really broken roads, the magnet held the phone on the holder without any movement, so the fear of falling is odd in that respect.

Summary

So how to evaluate the Swissten MagSafe car charger holder together with the 30W charger? For me, these are definitely very successful products that are simply reliable and nice to have in the car. I admit that the arm of the holder could be a little shorter, so that it could, for example, lean against the fan a little, or at least it would have less room for swinging (because logically, the shorter the arm, the less swinging, since the axis of movement is also smaller), but since even in the current version, it is not something that would explicitly limit a person's use, you can wave your hand over this thing. So if you are looking for a nice MagSafe car charger holder at a really nice price, I think the one from Swissten is more than suitable.
