Yesterday we wrote about the fact that Apple has finally started sending out the most powerful variants of the new iMac Pro. Those interested in a super-powerful workstation had to wait a little over a month compared to weaker configurations. However, as the first tests showed, the wait should be worth it. Benchmarks published today show how much more powerful these top configurations are compared to two weaker (and significantly cheaper) builds.

In a video test that appeared on YouTube (and which you can view here or below) the author compares three different configurations against each other. The least powerful in the test is the cheapest model, with an 8-core processor, an AMD Vega 56 GPU and 32GB of RAM. The middle configuration is a 10-core variant with an AMD Vega 64 GPU and 128GB of RAM. At the top is an 18-core machine with the same graphics and the same capacity of the operating memory. The only difference is in the size of the SSD disk.

The Geekbench 4 benchmark showed how far ahead the multi-core system is. In multi-threaded tasks, the difference between an 8 and 18 core system is more than 50%. Single-threaded performance is then very similar across models. SSD speeds are very similar across individual models (i.e. 1, 2 and 4TB).

Another test focused on video transcoding. The source was a 27-minute video shot in 8K resolution in RED RAW format. The 8-core configuration took 51 minutes to transfer, the 10-core configuration took less than 47 minutes, and the 18-core configuration took 39 and a half minutes. The difference between the most expensive and the cheapest configuration is thus roughly 12 minutes (ie a little over 21%). Similar results appeared in the case of 3D rendering and video editing in Final Cut Pro X. You can find more tests in the video embedded above.

The question remains whether the huge surcharge for a more powerful variant is worth it. The price difference between 8 and 18 core configurations is almost 77 thousand crowns. If you make a living by processing video or creating 3D scenes, and every minute of rendering costs you imaginary money, then there is probably nothing to think about. However, top configurations are not bought for "joy". If your employer gives you one (or you buy it yourself), you have something to look forward to.
