The macOS operating system offers relatively rich options when it comes to working with open application windows. Thanks to the mentioned functions, you can comfortably use two windows side by side, change the size of the windows, or change their position. We bring you several tips for working with windows in macOS that will be appreciated not only by beginners.

Changing the position and size of windows

You can easily move an open application window around the desktop of your Mac by placing the mouse cursor on its upper or lower edge, holding it and simply dragging. If you want to change the size of the window, point the mouse cursor to one of its corners, or to the side or top edge, click, hold and drag. If you hold down the Option (Alt) key while dragging, both opposite sides of the window will move simultaneously.

Maximization and Mission Control

To maximize a window on a Mac, most users click on the green button in the upper left corner of the window. But if you want to see more options, first point the mouse cursor at the green button. A menu will appear, from which you can then select the desired option. If you want to go into Mission Control from full-screen mode to see previews of other open windows, press Control + Up Arrow.

Minimize and hide

You can easily and quickly minimize the window of an active application on a Mac by clicking on the yellow circle in its upper left corner, or by pressing the Cmd + M keys. You can also set the application window to automatically minimize after you double-click it. In the upper left corner of your Mac screen, click Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Dock and Menu Bar. Check the Double-click option in the window header, and then choose Minimize from the drop-down menu. You can also hide an active application by right-clicking its icon in the Dock and selecting Hide.

Split View

A great tool within the macOS operating system is SplitView, which allows you to work in two different windows side by side at the same time. Make sure none of the windows you want to use are maximized. Then point the mouse cursor to the green circle in the upper left corner of one of the windows, and in the menu that appears, choose Place the window on the left side of the screen or Place the window on the right side of the screen as needed. Do the same with the second window. You can change the ratio between the two windows by dragging the middle bar.

Keyboard shortcuts to the max

You can use a number of keyboard shortcuts to quickly and efficiently work with windows within the macOS operating system. Press Cmd + H to hide the foreground application window, and Cmd + Option (Alt) + H to hide all other windows. The shortcut Cmd + M is used to minimize the active window, with the help of the shortcut Cmd + N you open a new window of the given application. If you want to close the active application window, use the keyboard shortcut Cmd + W. Press Control + Down Arrow to show all application windows in the foreground. And if you press the keys Control + F4, you can start working with the keyboard in the window that is currently active.
