At this year's WWDC, Apple showed immense openness towards developers. In addition to extensions, options for integration into the system, widgets in the Notification Center or custom keyboards, the company has opened another long-requested option for developers, namely to use accelerated JavaScript using the Nitro engine and other browser speed improvements, which until now were only available for Safari.

In iOS 8, third-party browsers such as Chrome, Opera or Dolphin will be as fast as the default iOS browser. However, the same applies to applications that use the built-in browser to open links. We could thus notice improvements in the new operating system with Facebook, Twitter clients or RSS readers.

According to Huib Keinhout, who is in charge of developing Opera Coast, the new browser from Opera, support for JavaScript acceleration looks very promising. The difference should be noticeable mainly on sites using this web technology to a large extent, but in general the newly available improvements will have an impact on stability and simplify some processes. "Overall, we are optimistic. It looks promising, but we will be sure when everything goes smoothly once everything is implemented and tested,” says Kleinhout.

Mobile web browser developers will still have one major disadvantage against Safari – they won't be able to set the app as the default, so links from most apps will still open in Safari. Hopefully, in time, we will also see the possibility of setting default applications sometime in a future version of iOS.
