Apple introduced the 3rd generation iPhone SE this spring. We can look at it however critically, but it is here and Apple keeps it in the menu because it has certain sales, while the company has the maximum possible margin on it. Now, however, there is already active speculation about the 4th generation. But does it even make sense?

Simply put, it doesn't. So much for my opinion and if you don't want to read any further, you don't have to. But if you are wondering why I stand by this opinion, you can continue. I don't want to develop the idea here about how the iPhone SE is intended for developing markets, when it is not, because it is available worldwide and therefore Apple offers it in developed markets as well. Most of the speculation is that Apple will take the iPhone XR and practically just give it the current chip. Now it would be the A15 Bionic, because fitting it with the one from the iPhone 14 Pro would still not be effective compared to the rest of the equipment.

iPhone XR as a reasonable but unnecessary choice

The iPhone XR is actually being talked about as the ideal choice because it was the most affordable iPhone with Face ID that no longer featured a Home Button. In addition, it only had one camera, which in the case of a "lightweight" model seems more reasonable than reaching for the practically identical iPhone 11 with two cameras. After all, the difference between these two models is only in the front camera, when the XR model has only 7MPx resolution and the iPhone 11 already has 12MPx and, of course, the chip used, which will not matter in a certain revival, because it will certainly be more powerful.

So if it is a matter of cutting technology to the maximum and bringing the cheapest solution with only an advanced chip, the iPhone XR makes sense in this respect. But it alludes to the LCD display technology, when the iPhone X, which is a year older, already got OLED, and which was then also used in the iPhone XS, 11 Pro and from the entire iPhone 12 series onwards. But if we start from Apple's strategy, when it really takes an old model and practically only gives it a new chip, does it actually make sense to bring anything from history to life? Maybe the "new iPhone XR" would get 5G and some software improvements to the camera, but that would be about it.

Price is simply a problem for us

Arguing over the price is currently very difficult, but let's assume that the 4th generation iPhone SE would cost the same as the third, i.e. currently 13 CZK. It would have the design of the iPhone XR, a 990" LCD display, one 6,1MPx camera (Deep Fusion, Smart HDR 12 for photos, Photo styles, Portrait mode - all this the iPhone XR does not have), an A4 Bionic chip and 15G, which would be practically all news. For an undemanding user, it might not be an outright bad phone, just not having the LCD display.

But a more feasible way would be to simply make the iPhone 12 cheaper. Apple is currently still selling it for a high price of CZK 19, because unfortunately the discount that should have been introduced by the iPhone 990 did not appear. If that were the case, its price should be CZK 14 lower . And if Apple were to release iPhone 3 next year and the prices of all existing series would fall again, we would actually reach a price around the current SE model. Although the European market is in crisis, this works in the US, and clearly the iPhone 500 emerges as the clear winner from the entire comparison of forces. The only question remains is how much longer Apple will provide it with iOS support so that its purchase makes long-term sense.
