Apple organizes several of its events every year, but WWDC clearly deviates from them. Although this was the event where the company once introduced new iPhones, it has been without hardware announcements since 2017. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't give her your attention.

Is there any hope for hardware? Of course you do, because hope dies last. Whether or not this year brings a MacBook Air, a new HomePod, a VR or AR consumption product announcement, this is still Apple's most important event of the year. First of all, because it is not a one-time event, and because here the company will reveal what it has in store for us in the rest of the year.

WWDC is a developer conference. Its name already clearly states to whom it is primarily intended - developers. Also, the whole event does not start and end with the keynote, but continues throughout the week. So we don't have to see it, because the public is more or less only interested in the opening speech, but the rest of the program is no less important. Developers are what make our iPhones, iPads, Macs and Apple Watch what they are.

News for everyone

The most watched event of the year is certainly the one in September, at which Apple will present the new iPhones. And it's a bit of a paradox, because even those who don't buy them are interested in them. Whereas WWDC will show new operating systems for the Apple devices we all use, which will give us new functionality. So we don't have to buy new iPhones and Mac computers right away, and at the same time we get a certain portion of news even for our old irons, which can revive them in a certain way.

So, at WWDC, whether physically or virtually, developers meet, solve problems and receive information on where their applications and games should go in the coming months. But we, the users, benefit from this, because the new functions will not only be brought by the system as such, but also by third-party solutions that implement the new features into their solution. In the end, it's a win-win for everyone involved.

There's a lot of it

WWDC keynotes tend to be quite long, with their footage exceeding two hours. There is usually a lot that Apple wants to show - whether it's new functions in operating systems or news within various developer tools. We will definitely hear about Swift this year (by the way, the invitation directly refers to it), Metal, probably also ARKit, Schoolwork and others. It might be a bit boring for some, but these tools are what make Apple devices what they are and that's why they have their place in the presentation.

If nothing else, at least we will see where Apple is heading its platforms again, whether it is unifying them more or moving them further away, whether new ones are coming and old ones disappearing, whether they are merging into one, etc. WWDC is therefore more important than just introducing new generations of devices, because it determines the direction in which they will be moving forward next year, which is why this conference is really worth paying attention to. WWDC22 starts already on Monday, June 6 at 19 p.m. our time.
