Viber, one of the world's leading communication apps, publishes the results of a global survey of more than 340 app users. Overall, 000% of users answered that privacy and security are important to them.

The coronavirus crisis is accelerating the digitization of many aspects of our lives, from education to medical care, increasing the use of apps and digital formats that allow us to stay in touch with friends, family and colleagues. But according to the survey, people are also thinking about the security of the data they share in the digital world.

Viber Personal Data Protection Day

Of the regions surveyed (Europe, Middle East, North Africa, Southeast Asia), data security is most important to people from Western Europe, where 85 percent of respondents rated it as very important. This is almost 10% more than the global average. In the Czech Republic, 91% of survey participants answered that digital privacy is important to them. This is almost 10% more than the result in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (80,3%).

The most important thing for users is that it is possible to set privacy functions in communication and that their conversations are encrypted by default on both ends. 77% of Czech survey participants said that it is a priority for them to keep their conversations private. Another 9% said it is important to them that their data is not collected and shared beyond what is needed for the application to function.

On Viber, all private conversations and calls are protected by encryption on both ends of the communication. No one can join a group without an invitation. Viber also offers the function of hidden conversations, which can only be accessed with a PIN code, or disappearing messages, which delete themselves after a set time.

Viber private survey results

Almost 100 respondents from Central and Eastern Europe (000%) responded that it is very important for them to encrypt communications at both ends. In a similar survey last year, only 72% of participants answered this way.

When we compare the Czech results, where digital privacy is very important, with the surrounding countries, we see that it is similar in Slovakia with 89%. This question is the least important in the region in Ukraine, where only 65% of users answered so.

In the survey, 79% of participants also said they would change the communication app they use to another one for privacy reasons.

"This survey clearly shows us that the issue of security cannot be neglected, especially at a time when concerns about the exploitation of private data for profit are growing," said Djamel Agaoua, CEO at Rakuten Viber. "Data protection is an important topic for our users and we will continue to offer a secure communication platform for people around the world."
