Yesterday, Corning, the manufacturer of Gorilla Glass, presented a new generation of its tempered glass called Gorilla Glass 4. Compared to the previous generations, which can be found on the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, for example, it should have better scratch resistance, as it does every year. This year, however, Corning focused on a completely different problem. A very common damage to the display, in addition to scratches, is mainly its breakage as a result of a fall. By carefully studying why and how glass breaks, Corning was able to come up with a material that is twice as shatter-resistant as any other solution on the market, including Gorilla Glass 3.

Corning researchers examined hundreds of broken devices and found that damage caused by sharp contact accounted for more than seventy percent of failures in the field. Researchers have developed a new phone drop test method that simulates real-world glass shattering events, based on thousands of hours of analysis of cover glass that shatters in the field or in the lab.

Corning simulated dropping the phone on a hard surface using sandpaper, on which the device was dropped from a height of one meter. According to the results, the fourth generation Gorilla Glass withstood 80 percent of all falls, i.e. without breaking the glass or creating cobwebs. It is still not completely unbreakable glass, but it is a significant leap in terms of material, which may save our phone, or at least an expensive replacement of the display.

The company calculates that the first phones with Gorilla Glass 4 should appear already this quarter, and we will probably see it in the next generation of iPhones, Apple has been using Gorilla Glass since the first generation of phones. In the past, there were reports that Apple could replace the tempered glass with sapphire, however, due to crash of GT Advanced this will certainly not happen in the near future.

Corning still wants to improve drop resistance, after all, there are still 20% of cases where even the fourth generation of Gorilla Glass will break, and the readability of the display in the sun is still an area where significant innovation can occur. For now, this is the music of the future, but for now we won't have to worry so much about possible falls, which is exactly what ordinary users expect from a modern display - more resistance for rougher handling.
