Last week, Apple launched a replacement program for the batteries of the 15-inch MacBook Pro. For a large part, there is a risk of the battery overheating and, in the worst case, even catching fire.

The exchange program only applies to MacBook Pro 15" generation 2015, which were sold from September 2015 to February 2017. The installed batteries suffer from a defect that leads to overheating and the resulting negative effects. Some report bulging batteries that lift the trackpad, rarely the battery has caught fire.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recorded a total of 26 incidents of overheating laptop batteries. Among them, there were a total of 17 who had slight damage to things, 5 of them talk about slight burns and one about smoke inhalation.

Over 400 affected MacBook Pros

There are an estimated 432 manufactured laptops with defective batteries in the US and another 000 in Canada. Figures for other markets are not yet known. Earlier this month, specifically on June 26, there was an incident in Canada, but luckily no MacBook Pro user was injured.

Apple asks that you verify the serial number of your computer and, if it matches, immediately contact the company's representative at an Apple Store or an authorized service center. The dedicated "15-inch MacBook Pro Battery Recall Program" webpage then provides detailed instructions. You can find the link here.

Support says the replacement can take up to an inconvenient three weeks. Fortunately, the whole exchange is free and the user gets a completely new battery.

Only older 2015 models are part of the program. Newer 15-inch MacBook Pros do not suffer from this defect. The generation from 2016 should be fine, except their ailments such as keyboards or notorious overheating.

To find out your model, click the Apple () logo in the menu bar in the upper-left corner of the screen and choose About This Mac. Check if you have a "MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015)" model. If so, go to the support page to enter the serial number. Use it to find out if your computer is included in the exchange program.
