Spotlight is a system-wide search engine for macOS and iOS. Apple announced its arrival for the first time in 2004 at WWDC in June, and Spotlight was released to users together with the Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger operating system in April 2005. In today's article, we will take a closer look at Spotlight for Mac.

Search

Spotlight on Mac you activate with a simple keystroke Cmd + Spacebar, another option is to click on magnifying glass icon in the upper-right corner of your Mac screen. You can then type either into Spotlight any expression, or search specific file type or location. To search of a particular kind file, use an expression in Spotlight "species", followed by colon a by file type - “type:folder”, “type:video”, but maybe also “type:JPEG”. You can then go to the file with the help of a keyboard shortcut Cmd+R. For display all results search in Finder, scroll to the bottom of the list of search results and select Show all in Finder.

In the Finder, you can then search results conveniently specify – under the search field in the upper right corner of the Finder, click on the + icon and refine the search parameters. If you do not want to be certain category displayed in Spotlight search results on your Mac, run System Preferences -> Spotlight, where in the tab search results you leave only the categories you want to show in Spotlight. In the tab Privacy then you can specify a list of locations that will be from Spotlight search results omitted. You can work with Spotlight search results in different ways – song sample for example, you can play directly in the preview after clicking the buttonplayback. If you want to find out what the files were last opened within a specific application, type in Spotlight application name (without pressing Enter) – the list of recently opened files will be displayed in preview section.

Other tasks in Spotlight

You can also use Spotlight on Mac to finding out information, as dictionary definition, basic calculations, unit transfers and many others. For type to look up a dictionary definition into Spotlight the desired term and scroll down to in the search results the Definitions section – you can find the explanation in the window to the right of the search results.
