VideoLAN's popular VLC media player, which has found its base of satisfied users on both Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android operating systems, comes – as expected – even up to the fourth generation of Apple TV.

VLC for Mobile offers Apple TV users the ability to watch selected media without the need to convert along with skipping between different chapters. The integration of subtitles from OpenSubtitles.org is also a great feature. Login data to this server will be securely stored on the Apple TV and users will be able to access them via iPhone or iPad.

Furthermore, it is also possible (thanks to SMB and UPnP media servers and FTP and PLEX protocols) to watch favorite images that are stored on other storages and are automatically shared to Apple TV. VLC also has the function of consuming media content from a web browser based on remote playback. Among other things, users can change the playback speed, view the covers of their favorite albums and much more.

Similar kinds of applications like VLC were not possible in previous generations of Apple TV due to the elimination of third-party support, but now there is a change and with the new tvOS update, developers can produce more similar applications.

VideoLAN has been vocal about the lack of support for cloud services such as Dropbox, OneDrive and Box, saying that these features are still in beta testing. Even so, the company said it's off to a good start.

Free to get VLC for Mobile applications can be made in the classic form from the tvOS App Store, as well as using an iOS device. Once the application is downloaded on the iPhone or iPad, this task will automatically be reflected in tvOS and users will only be able to install it without unnecessary searching in the App Store on Apple TV.
