At the beginning of June, Apple will certainly hold its WWDC conference again this year, because even COVID-19 did not stand in the way, even if the event then took place only virtually. Now everything is back to normal, and such innovations as the Apple Vision Pro are also presented here. But it's still about operating systems, when we expect iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 this year.

iOS 18 is expected to be compatible with the iPhone XR, and thus also the iPhone XS, which have the same A12 Bionic chip, and of course all the newer ones. So it clearly follows that iOS 18 will be compatible with all iPhones that iOS 17 is currently compatible with. However, this does not mean that all devices will get all the features.

With iOS 18, a new generative AI function for Siri is to come along with other artificial intelligence options, which will certainly be tied to the hardware. We know that even older devices could handle many new features, but Apple logically locks them in order to make new devices more interesting for customers. Therefore, one cannot hope that Apple's AI will even look into such old models as the iPhone XS introduced in September 2018. However, RCS support and interface redesign should certainly be introduced across the board.

However, taking a look at Apple's update policy here, it will be quite interesting to see how long it will keep the iPhone XR and XS alive. This year they will only be 6 years old, which is actually not that much. Google for its Pixel 8 and Samsung for the Galaxy S24 series promise 7 years of Android support. If Apple doesn't match this value with iOS 19 and surpass it with iOS 20, it's in trouble.

iPhones have been the model for years in terms of how Apple takes care of system updates. But now we have the real threat of Android competition, which clearly erases this advantage. In addition, when iOS is no longer up-to-date, you will no longer be able to use various applications, typically banking ones. It doesn't really matter on Android, because there the application is tuned to the most widespread and not the latest system, which is the opposite of Apple's approach. It simply follows from the fact that Samsung's current flagship may have a greater utility value than the iPhone 15. Of course, we will only know that in 7 years.

iOS 18 Compatibility:

  • iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max
  • iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone XS, XS Max, XR
  • iPhone SE 2nd and 3rd generation

iPadOS

As for iPads and their iPadOS 18, it is assumed that the new version of the system will no longer be available for tablets equipped with A10X Fusion chips. This means that the update would not be available for the first-generation 10,5" iPad Pro or the second-generation 12,9" iPad Pro, both of which were released in 2017. Of course, this means that iPadOS 18 will also make the cut for iPads with the A10 Fusion chip , i.e. iPad 6th and 7th generation.

iPadOS 18 Compatibility:

  • iPad Pro: 2018 and later
  • iPad Air: 2019 and later
  • iPad mini: 2019 and later
  • iPad: 2020 and later

Apple is expected to release the aforementioned versions of its new operating systems in September of this year after the introduction of the iPhone 16.
