The new Portrait Lighting photo mode is one of the more fundamental innovations that Apple has introduced for the iPhone 8 Plus and the upcoming iPhone X. It is an evolution of the classic Portrait mode that Apple introduced last year with the iPhone 7 Plus. For Apple, this is a really essential feature, on which it has built a significant part of the marketing for new phones. As part of this campaign, a pair of new videos appeared on YouTube last night, which clearly show how this mode is actually used and, above all, how easy it is.

These are two fairly short videos that half-heartedly demonstrate the process a user must follow to take great portrait photos. If you haven't held the new iPhones yet, you can get a fairly clear idea of how this mode works. Only three simple steps are required from the user, which are described in the videos.

The first video shows what it takes to take such a photo. The second video then focuses on the procedure that leads to the subsequent editing and adjustments of individual lighting effects. These adjustments are also very simple and anyone should be able to do them. A big advantage is that you can manipulate the photo even after it has been taken. The set mode is thus not rigidly tied to the photo, but the phone can change it according to the user's needs. The resulting image looks really good, although it is still far from perfect. However, as in the case of the classic Portrait mode, it can be expected that Apple will gradually modify and improve it so that there is no distortion or poor rendering of the photographed object.
