If you have recently purchased a Mac or MacBook in the basic configuration, then you have a 128 GB SSD disk, in the best case, 256 GB. This is not much these days, anyway, a few years ago, MacBook Air users got by with 64 GB. Sooner or later, it's easy to run out of space on your Mac. There are a number of different tips and tricks that can save a lot of storage space, and the simplest are often the best. Let's see together in this article how you can regularly get up to several gigabytes of free storage space by activating a simple function on your Mac.

All files, folders and data that you delete on your Mac or MacBook are automatically moved to the trash. From here, you can "check out" these files at any time until the trash is emptied. However, unfortunately, users often forget to empty the trash, so data accumulates and accumulates in it until disk space runs out. However, there is a simple function in macOS that enables the automatic emptying of the trash after thirty days. This means that every file that appears in the recycle bin is automatically deleted from the disk after thirty days in it (similar to, for example, photos on the iPhone in the Recently Deleted album). If you want to activate this function, proceed as follows:

  • Within macOS, move the cursor to the upper left corner where you tap icon .
  • Select an option from the menu that appears About this Mac.
  • After clicking on this option, a new window will open, in the top menu of which you can move to the section Storage.
  • Here in the upper right corner of the window, click on Management…
  • A new window will open, in which you can use the left menu to move to the section Recommendation.
  • Find the box Automatically empty the trash and click the button next to it Turn on…

There are also many other tricks in this window to free up storage space on your Mac. In the recommendations, you will find, for example, the option to save data on iCloud, optimize storage within the TV app, or perhaps the option to clean up the mess. In the left menu, you can also switch to different sections that will help you clean up your storage. In iOS files you can find, for example, downloaded versions of iOS or backups, in the Documents section you can then view all large data and delete them.
