Pixelmator, a popular Photoshop alternative for Mac and a popular graphics editor in general, has received another major free update to version 3.2. The new version, called Sandstone, brings a significantly improved tool for photo corrections, support for 16-bit color channels or layer locking.

The repair tool is not a completely new feature, but it has been completely redesigned by the Pixelmator developers. The tool is used to clean photos from unwanted objects. Users can now use three modes for this purpose. Quick fix mode is good for smaller objects, especially artifacts in photos. Standard mode is more or less similar to the previous tool, which can remove larger objects on a simple background. If you then need to remove objects from more complex surfaces, then the advanced mode of the tool will come in handy. According to the creators, Pixelmator achieves this by combining complex algorithms, which also have four times less impact on computer memory.

The support of 16-bit channels is another response to the requests of graphic designers, who can thus work with a larger theoretical range of colors (up to 281 trillion) and a larger amount of color data. Another novelty is the long-requested option to lock layers, which prevents users from accidentally editing them when working with a large number of layers, which can happen quite often thanks to the automatic selection that Pixelmator supports. The finally created vector shapes can be newly saved in the shape library and used anywhere later.

Pixelmator 3.2 is a free update for existing users, otherwise available on the Mac App Store for €26,99.
