A new version of the popular image editor Pixelmator, codenamed Marble, has been released. Among the improvements in this update are optimizations for Mac Pro, improvements for layer styles and more.

Pixelmator 3.1 is optimized for Mac Pro in such a way that it allows the use of both graphics processing units (GPUs) simultaneously to create effects. Images in 16-bit color scale are now supported, and automatic backup of background photos works while the image composition is rendered.

Even if you don't own a Mac Pro, you'll still see many other improvements. In the Marble version, you can select more than one layer with styles and change the transparency of selected layers at once, you can also apply styles to a new layer after you've already changed it with Paint Bucket or Pixel tools.

Many previously deleted effects have also been brought back, there is better support for the RAW image file format, and there are many other improvements - more information is provided by the developers on their site.
