Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, along with his wife, Kim Schiller, donated $10 million to Bowdoin College's Coastal Studies Center. It is a college dedicated to ocean research and environmental studies. Thanks to Schiller's gift, the college is able to significantly expand its research. School officials said the donation from the Schillers will enable the college to offer students a state-of-the-art laboratory, classrooms, housing and dining facilities.

This extraordinary act of generosity and the vision of Phil and Kim Schiller transforms the Center for Coastal and Ocean Studies into a facility where Bowdoin faculty students can devote themselves indefinitely to developing their knowledge and learning from one another to develop an understanding of the oceans and marine life for which they have an extreme the impact of climate change on our planet.

The Schillers explained the donation in a video shared by the college on its website. Schiller justified the gift by saying that it is Bowdoin that is trying to develop new methods of research and combating ocean pollution, climate change and other environmental issues that both spouses say are extremely important. Schiller was born on the East Coast and graduated from Boston College, where he majored in biology. One of his sons, Mark, graduated from Bowdoin just this year. In response to the donation, Bowdoin named its center the Schiller Coastal Studies Center – SCSC. The center is located on 118 acres, approximately 2,5 miles from the Maine coast.
