Yesterday, we wrote about the fact that over the weekend Apple decided to launch a new service campaign, in which it will offer users a free repair of their damaged keyboard in their MacBooks. In the official press statement, Apple was relatively specific, even so there were many questions and ambiguities about how this event actually works in practice. Macrumors editors have put together all the potentially important information you should know about this event.

If you're hearing about this event for the first time, I recommend reading the preview article above. Below you can read additional information in the points, which may not have been completely clear at first glance. The source should be both Apple's official internal documents and statements from company representatives.

  • According to an internal document from Friday last week, Apple will also repair those keyboards that the owner tried to repair and somehow damaged it. The same also applies to damage to the upper part of the chassis (in this case it is probably various scratches, etc.)
  • If your MacBook has been spilled with some kind of liquid, don't count on a free replacement
  • All those who register non-functioning/stuck keys are entitled to a replacement or repair
  • Separate spare parts should not be available for Czech keyboards, and in this case a complete replacement of the entire part should occur
  • If typing on the keyboard causes any unexpected behavior and the device has already had one service repair, the owner is entitled to a complete replacement of the entire part
  • Service time is 5-7 working days. Prepare to not see your MacBook for a while. However, this time may be extended as the number of people interested in this repair increases
  • The wording in the official documents suggests that it should be possible to service a particular MacBook repeatedly
  • Apple is offering refunds for previous official fixes for this problem. The request is handled directly via Apple customer support (phone/email/online chat)
  • It is not clear if the replaced keyboards are modified in any way to make them more resistant to dust and dirt
  • If you get a 2016 MacBook Pro repaired, you'll get a new keyboard from the 2017+ models, which is slightly different in the markings on some characters
  • Keyboards in models from 2017 should be slightly different than those from the previous year. However, it is not officially confirmed

How are you doing with your MacBook? Are you having problems with your keyboard and considering this service, or are you avoiding these inconveniences for now?
