Following the introduction of the iPhone 13, it was discovered that Apple was blocking third-party display repairs by disabling Face ID on such devices. This is due to the pairing of the display with the microcontroller on the specific unit of the iPhone. The company has come under a lot of criticism for this, which is why it is now pivoting.

Non-functional Face ID on iPhone 13 occurs when the display is replaced so that it is not re-paired with the microcontroller, for which unauthorized services do not have the necessary tools. But since replacing the screen is one of the most common repairs, and Face ID is an important function after all, there was a justified wave of indignation against it. This is because the company is only artificially increasing the demands for service. As a solution to pairing microcontrollers, it was offered to desolder the chip and re-solder it to the spare unit. It probably goes without saying that it was extremely hard work.

However, after all the criticism, Apple confirmed the magazine The Verge, that it will come with a software update that will ensure that Face ID will continue to work on those iPhone 13 units that will have their display repaired from an independent third-party service. Apple has not specified when the software update will be released, but it can be assumed that it will be with iOS 15.2. For many, it is practically enough to just wait.

New Age?

So this is of course good news that will save many users and service technicians a lot of worry and work. It is rather interesting to see that Apple is reacting to the case, and in a positive way. This company does not exactly belong to those that would solve such complaints in any way. But as we can see lately, maybe something is really changing inside the company. After users complained about the macro functionality on the iPhone 13 Pro, Apple added an option to turn off the lens change in the device settings.

If we then look at MacBook Pros, the company has been criticized since 2016 for deploying only USB-C connectors in the chassis of the device. This year, however, we saw an expansion of HDMI ports, a card reader, and MagSafe charging returned. The MacBook Pro battery is also no longer glued to the chassis, making it easier to replace. So these are quite interesting indications pointing to the fact that maybe Apple is changing. Perhaps it is also related to ecology and extending the lifespan of individual products.

On the other hand, here we still have problems after replacing the battery in iPhones that still do not show the battery health. At the same time, Apple could solve this in exactly the same way as in the case of Face ID and a replaced display.
